action

The year 2676: By impacting meteoroids -Schauer the emergency system of interstellar freighter is Hunter Gratzner triggered and awakened the traveling in cold sleep occupation. The captain is killed by the solids sifting through the ship. The ship has gone off course and is caught in the gravity of a three- star system. The docking pilot Carolyn Fry has to make an emergency landing for the ship under severe time pressure and blows up the engine and cargo sections. The navigator can only just barely prevent the area with the passengers who are still asleep in the cold in order to quickly bring the aircraft out of its inclined position. With great difficulty an emergency landing on a desert planet succeeds, whereby the ship is irreparably damaged and most of the 40 passengers perish. Eleven people survive - including the notorious felon Richard B. Riddick, who was caught by the bounty hunter Johns and transported on this ship.

The small group soon learns that the greatest danger does not come from the murderer, who has initially disappeared. Under the barren surface of the desert planet live nightmarish creatures who cannot stand any form of light. However, this does not seem to be a problem at the moment, as thanks to three suns on the planet it is always day. Fry and Johns manage to get Riddick on their side for the time being. Since Riddick is worth twice as much alive for Johns, he has no illusions that he will actually receive the freedom promised him for his cooperation. Riddick also treats Fry with a certain respect after overhearing that she was readily prepared to sacrifice the passengers in order to have a higher chance of survival in the crash landing herself.

The castaways discover an abandoned geological research station and find out that its inhabitants were killed by the monsters in a solar eclipse that recurs every 22 years . They also find out that another eclipse is imminent. Since the planets will move in parallel for a long time, the survivors cannot crawl temporarily until day comes again. They find a rescue ship and try to recover the energy cells of their destroyed ship with a solar-powered vehicle in the last sunlight. However, the solar eclipse has already begun, and the survivors are trapped in the ship's wreck as the darkness outside fills with thousands of the dark creatures. In the subsequent darkness, Riddick is the only one able to orientate himself thanks to his surgically altered night eyes. With him as a guide and with all the artificial light they can find, they make their way back.

As the situation becomes more critical and there are only six survivors, Johns wants to sacrifice a child to the beasts as a distraction and asks Riddick to murder him while he wants to keep the group in check. Instead, there is a fight between the two. John's is eaten by one of the monsters in the dark, Riddick escapes. After the group has shrunk even further, he leaves the surviving three people in a cave and makes it back to the station alone. He no longer cares about the abandoned and begins preparing for the start. At the last moment he is stopped by Fry. She refuses to leave with him and convinces him to bring the other two - Imam and Jack - on board too. In one final fight, she rushes to the aid of the injured Riddick. However, Fry is caught and killed by one of the monsters. Riddick returns to the spaceship, and the three survivors eventually flee the planet.

Reviews

“Solidly staged science fiction horror film that knows how to combine the standards of the genre in an independent story. Careful in the visual design, interesting in the layout of the main character. "

“Science fiction thriller about bloodthirsty extraterrestrials (a mixture of pterosaurs and the ' alien ') on manhunt, constructed with well-known elements, but realized with a remarkable visual flair . While the effects are more useful, the dark production design of the future actioner and Vin Diesel as a cool hero are convincing. "

“At least the special effects are of a high standard, and the monsters look very similar to the original 'Alien' in many details. The lack of visual ideas is followed closely by the content. But even if Twohy has mercilessly stolen from numerous genre films, his staging delivers consistently feverish tension. "

“Birds form the hostile species, more aggressive than with Hitchcock , horrific like with HR Giger , and frighteningly negative, because they can only be recognized by night vision eyes [Austrian for perceptible]. The view of people through the corresponding devices is one of the most effective scenes of 'Pitch Black', which does not save on shocks, but, like all B-films, subjects them to an economy that has its driving forces elsewhere: In a logic of the unconscious. "

  • In 2000 the film was nominated for a Saturn Award in the category “Best Science Fiction Film”.
  • Cinematographer David Eggby received the 2001 Golden Tripod and Cinematographer of the Year awards from the Australian Cinematographers Society .

Sequels and offshoots

In 2004 the successor Riddick: Chronicles of a Warrior came into the cinemas, who could barely bring in his costs. The DVD of the film, along with the animated short film Riddick: Warriors of Darkness and the video games The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena , however, became a financial success, so that in March 2009 Vin Diesel announced the implementation of two more Riddick feature films at the launch of The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena . The sequel Riddick ran in Germany on September 19, 2013 in cinemas.
