Name of the place

The Italian name Porto Re is derived from the Latin word portorium ( customs ). Kraljevica was an important trading port and was originally built for this purpose as well. Locals called it colloquially "Portore", in Italian "Porto Re" for Königshafen. The Croatian name Kraljevica first appears in a book in Rijeka in 1605.

history

Traces of an Illyrian and Roman settlement were discovered in Kraljevica.

16th Century

In 1525 Kraljevica was mentioned in documents as the port of the Frankopan city of Hreljin . This means that at that time Kraljevica was a part of the historical Hreljin. Over time, Kraljevica has made itself independent of the historical Hreljin.

17th century

At the beginning of the 17th century a feudal castle ( Stari Grad ) was built by the Zrinski princes . The castle is in the city center. The princes Zrinski ruled over Kraljevica.

In 1650 the Frankopan princes built the new castle ( Novi Grad ). The locals call it "Frankopanski grad" (Frankopanenburg).

In 1671 the alleged magnate conspiracy of the Zrinski and the Frankopans against the Habsburg dynasty was planned. The conspiracy failed and all of the Frankopan's and Zrinski's properties were confiscated and looted, including the two castles in Kraljevica. The old castle became a garrison of the Austrian army and the new castle served as an army hospital. The hospital was later converted into a civil one, which was in operation until around 1990.

The first shipyard was built at the end of the 17th century. The shipyards are still important employers in this area today.

18th century

Charles VI had a shipyard built for Austrian shipping in 1729 - it was supposed to compete with Venice . The shipyard was the first on the entire Croatian coast.

The royal port was rebuilt in the 18th century .

20th century

A seaside resort was built in Kraljevica around 1900. Many old villas from this period can still be found today. The beginnings of tourism fell into this period.

When Italian fascists took power in the Free State of Fiume through a coup in 1922 , the legitimate government fled to Kraljevica.

During the Second World War , the Croatian had Ustasha regime a high price for the " Independent State of Croatia pay". Some parts of the country were ceded to Italy, including Kraljevica and the surrounding area.

From 1941 to 1943 the Italians operated a concentration camp in Kraljevica. It is not known whether prisoners were killed here.

Attractions

The New Castle (Novi Grad) was built in 1650. It is a Renaissance style castle. The floor plan is square, with cylindrical corner towers. Here the conspiracy of the Zrinski and the Frankopans against the Austrian monarchy was supposedly planned. After the failed conspiracy, the palace was looted by imperial orders and converted into a military hospital. It later became a civil hospital. The Jesuits, who ran the hospital for a while, had a second floor built in 1883 and changed the former floor plan.
