action

Two consecutive parts belong together thematically.

Part 1 (1991)

Two kingdoms have been at war with each other since ancient times.

After having two daughters, the king of one empire longs for an heir. He returns from the war full of confidence to witness the birth of his supposed son, but he is disappointed again: It is a daughter again. She is christened Fantaghirò. She gives her father quite a headache because she just doesn't want to submit to a woman's life. Finally, she is even expelled from the castle by her father.

In the wilderness, Fantaghirò meets the White Knight, who teaches her to fight and understand nature. When Fantaghirò returns to the castle, she contradicts her father again, who then sends her to work in the kitchen. A goose, whose head she should have cut off, helps her to escape and sends her to her father's bedroom, where Fantaghirò is supposed to wait and listen under the bed.

The king, meanwhile, is at odds. The enemy king has died, and his son Romualdo has made the king an offer: a duel should finally end the war. The king is now not sure whether to accept this. His fortune tellers advise against it, but the king turns to another oracle: The White Witch. She told him the truth before, although he didn't want to hear it at the time. The witch finally appears to him in his sleep and prophesies that only his descendants are destined to conquer. So, at their own request, he sends his three daughters, who pretend to be warriors, to a duel.

Part 2 (1991)

Fantaghirò's sisters return after a short time and only Fantaghirò remains. Romualdo is plagued by lovesickness during this time. In the forest he looked into Fantaghirò's eyes, who, however, were introduced to him as a nymph by the White Witch. He was told to go away and find those eyes in a person and then he would find love. Now he's looking everywhere for a girl with those eyes. When he meets Fantaghirò, who pretends to be Count von Walddorf, again, he realizes that the alleged count has the eyes that Romualdo is so desperately looking for.

Romualdo wants to know whether the count is a man or a woman. So he sends Fantaghirò two invitations. First he invites her to hunt in the raven gorge. There, in a grotto, lives the sacred animal. This kills the men and devours the women. Romualdo is convinced that a woman would be too afraid to go inside. Fantaghirò, however, is not afraid and defeats the animal. Romualdo is now even more confused than before. Next, he sends Fantaghirò an invitation to a swimming competition. Fantaghirò accepts again. Once there, she hesitates to undress until the two finally duel. Fantaghirò defeats Romualdo but cannot kill him, which is why her father has her locked up. After this disgrace Romualdo travels to the castle to place his life and that of his people in the hands of the king. He spares Romualdo's life and instead offers him to marry one of his daughters. In the end, Romualdo meets Fantaghirò again, and they kiss deeply.

After the black witch kidnapped Fantaghirò's father, the king, his troops, led by King Romualdo, rush to the castle of the black witch to free him. Meanwhile, Fantaghirò decides to stop using weapons, despite their promise, to follow the troops and support them in the fight against evil. Before she can achieve this, however, Fantaghirò has to overcome a number of dangers. This journey will not be easy for the king's troops either, as they will have to contend with many surprises on their way there as well as on the black castle. After days of marching, the warriors must submit to the test of the mistress of the forest, in which King Romualdo will emerge victorious. When the brave warriors finally see the castle of the black witch, Romualdo and his two companions, Ivaldo and Cataldo, go there to negotiate with the black king about the release of the father Fantaghiròs. After a brief battle on both sides, the three companions are sent back to their camp to face death at dawn. That same night Romualdo falls victim to the spell of the black witch, who, in the form of Fantaghiròs, makes Romualdo kiss her and thus makes the real Fantaghirò disappear from his memory.
