history

Rákoš was first mentioned in writing in 1318 as Torpholua and arose as a place below Köwy Castle , which went down in the 15th century. Other historical names are Tarfalva (1359), Rakos or Rakws (1427), Castrum Rakos or Rakosvar (1460) and Castrum Kevy alias Rakos (1470). The place was owned by the Bebek family , who owned a total of 23 portals in 1427 . The main sources of income were iron ore and copper mines and associated hammer mills and furnaces, but there were also carters and charcoal burners. In the 16th century economic activity came to a standstill because of Turkish incursions and high tributes; only in the 17th century under the rule of the Wesselényi dynasty did the place recover. Other owners were the Csákys in the 18th century and the Coburg and Koháry families in the 19th century . In 1828 there were 91 houses and 691 inhabitants.

Until 1918, the place in Gemer and Kleinhont County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia, or now Slovakia. In the course of the 20th century, the mines were initially shut down in the first Czechoslovak Republic, but were reactivated again after 1952.

Today the residents work in the timber industry, agriculture and as workers in the surrounding industrial plants.
