Rainer Welz (sociologist)

Rainer Welz (born August 20, 1947 in Mannheim ) is a German sociologist , suicide researcher , founder of a publishing house , non-fiction author , publisher and running athlete .

Life

Rainer Welz was born as the son of the businessman Günter Welz and his wife Ilse, née Schall. In his hometown he attended elementary school from 1954 to 1958 and then moved to the Lessing Gymnasium, where he graduated from high school in 1968. He then studied sociology and social psychology at the University of Mannheim and as minor subjects psychology , philosophy of science and political science with Hans Albert , Martin Irle , M. Rainer Lepsius and Rudolf Wildenmann . He completed his studies with the examination to become a qualified sociologist.

Scientific work

In December 1973 he joined the University of Heidelberg as a research associate at the DFG special research area 116 “Psychiatric Epidemiology” . In January 1977 he went back to Mannheim, where he worked as a research assistant at the Central Institute for Mental Health in the medical sociology department and as a deputy head of department. He was responsible for suicide research within the collaborative research project. Together with Rolf W. Schmidt and Rüdiger Färber, he initiated the founding of the Professional Association of German Sociologists (BDS) and was elected first chairman of the association on March 13, 1976 when it was founded in Mannheim.

In 1979 he received his doctorate as Dr. rer. pole. (rerum politicarum) at the Faculty of Business and Economics Social sciences at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen with a thesis on suicide attempts in Mannheim 1966–1975. An epidemiological, ecological and multi-level analysis of the frequency and regional distribution of suicide attempts . The working group on suicide research, consisting of Welz, Armin Schmidtke and Heinz Häfner , which was established in the Collaborative Research Center, carried out research projects with international resonance in the following years. At the University of Göttingen he took on a further university assistantship in the Department of Medical Psychology.

In 1995 he retired.

Other work

In 1983 he founded the Roderer und Welz publishing house in Regensburg .

Welz is a passionate endurance / long-distance runner. From November 9th, 2009 to April 5th, 2011 he was Chairman of the Board of LLC Marathon Regensburg eV
