Love on Detours (original title Raising Helen ) is an American comedy film by director Garry Marshall from 2004 .

action

Helen Harris is a very busy agent at a Manhattan modeling agency . After work, she enjoys spending the night in the hippest nightclubs in town. She has such a great influence in her agency that she organizes some promising modeling jobs for the model Tinka, who is a friend of her but so far unknown, so that Tinka is even contracted by the agency.

One day she goes to her sister Lindsay after work to celebrate her birthday, where she meets her other sister Jenny at the same time.

The next day, Jenny calls Helen and learns that Lindsay and her husband were both killed in a car accident. While reading out the will , the sisters learn to their both surprise that not Jenny, but Helen should look after Lindsay's three children. The reason for this decision is given to them by the late Lindsay through two carefully prepared letters to her sisters.

According to her various sister's wishes, Helen takes the children with her and moves with them to a larger apartment. Since they cannot afford a large apartment in Manhattan , the family lives in Queens . While looking for a suitable school for the three children, Helen met a pastor from the school, which was run by Evangelical Lutheran sponsors , and whom she later came closer to.

Helen makes some mistakes in the modeling agency, the children she brings to a fashion show disrupt the event and so she is finally fired. Her neighbor gets her a job as a receptionist at a used car dealer. The children are temporarily handed over to Jenny when Helen realizes that she is overwhelmed with the upbringing. Finally, at Tinka's urging, Helen gets her old job back and brings the children back.

Helen gets Jenny to read her letter from Lindsay, in which she explains why she chose Helen as a mother for her children. Jenny is a great mother, but Helen is more like Lindsay. Helen then returns to her apartment, where Jenny takes the children the next day. Helen and the children take Pastor Dan on the long-promised excursion to the Statue of Liberty .

Reviews

Ruthe Stein wrote in the San Francisco Chronicle of May 28, 2004 that the film - similar to previous films such as Big Daddy - conveys the message that unexpected parenting can give meaning to life. She said Kate Hudson was unable to carry a movie on her own, but with support she could add depth to the character she played.

Peter Debruge praised the way Helen Harris's relationship with religion was shown in the Miami Herald . In the style of Garry Marshall an "old school innocence" is visible.

"Despite the simple dramaturgy, it is an extremely entertaining comedy, which is entertaining thanks to a good script, the subtle feeling for secondary scenes and the lively play of all actors."

Kate Hudson was nominated for a Teen Choice Award in 2004.
