René Turrek (* 1977 in Osnabrück ) is a German graffiti artist

life and work

Since he was 16, Turrek has been spraying highway bridges and baffles with graffiti at night under the sprayer name "West". Because of damage to property, he received a two-year suspended sentence in a Bad Iburg court. He began to study German art history and illustration, which he broke off. At the age of 20 Turrek received his first orders for graffiti on canvas, later for external facades such as the 40 balconies of the Dörenbergklinik in Bad Iburg. In the clinic he showed his work for the first time in an exhibition. Further participation in group exhibitions in Amsterdam, Brighton and Copenhagen followed.

Turrek made portraits of Mark Forster , Robin Schulz , Snoop Dogg , Bruce Darnell , Rafael van der Vaart , Hans-Dietrich Genscher , Victoria Beckham , Paris Hilton , David Garrett , Jürgen Drews , Ralf Schumacher , the band Culcha Candela , Bushido and among others Albert von Thurn and Taxis . He showed some of them in the “Wall of Fame” exhibition in Berlin, Dubai and Los Angeles.

In 2012 in Cologne-Ehrenfeld he attempted a world record for an entry in the Guinness Book of Records under the heading “World's largest graffiti” by designing the outer wall of the local “climbing factory” with a 640 m² work . In 2014, together with 575 trainees from the Daimler AG locations in Wörth, Gaggenau and Mannheim and other participants, he attempted another world record attempt, in which a 16 m² picture was created with a time limit of 15 seconds per participant. In 2014 he realized two murals on the 45th floor of the Empire State Building in New York City.

In April 2018, in his first solo exhibition in Hamburg's “Apartimentum”, he showed numerous copies of masterpieces by established artists from the Chinese artist village of Dafen , which he had used as starting points for his own interpretations and provided with graffiti. From August to October 2018 his exhibition "Opposites attract" followed in the Kurländer Palais in Dresden .

Turrek's main occupation is the custom painting of high-priced automobiles. He developed a UV- resistant thermal lacquer that changes its color when it comes into contact with hot and cold water. Here, a temperature between 18 and 78 degrees can be determined, from which small crystals set up in the paint and make the layers of paint underneath visible. At temperatures below a certain number of degrees, the crystals lay back on the ground. In many of his painting work, Turrek's actual artistic spray design is only optically exposed under the influence of heat. He also developed a paint that reacts to noises and music and can be made to glow via electromagnetic impulses.

He also used headphones, cell phone cases, sneakers, skateboards, coffee mugs and toilets as image carriers, for which he received design contracts from large companies such as Sony , Adidas , Nike , Starbucks and Bench . Also, Tom Tailor , the Postbank , Stadtwerke Osnabrück, the Hilton properties and Mattel and Nikon took his services. For the 2017 Paramount Pictures film Transformers: The Last Knight , he created the design for the leader of the Autobots, "Optimus Prime". His clients include numerous celebrities such as Vin Diesel , Gigi Hadid , Robert Downey Jr. , Snoop Dogg , Rihanna , Michael Jordan , Paris Hilton , Justin Bieber , Marco Reus , Flo Rida , the ruling family of the Emirate of Dubai and others.
