The series was produced by Nickelodeon from 1991 to 1994. The original inventor of Ren & Stimpy is John Kricfalusi . After two seasons (19 episodes), he and the production company Spümcø were fired from Nickelodeon on the grounds that they did not adhere to production schedules. According to Kricfalusi himself, the real reason was that Nickelodeon found Ren & Stimpy too brutal, disgusting and overall not suitable for children.

After Kricfalusi's dismissal, the trademark rights remained with Nickelodeon, which continued to produce the series through the Games Animation studio. Some of the original animation designers continued to work without Kricfalusi, including character designer Bob Camp and art director Bill Wray. Production was discontinued after a total of 52 episodes.

In the German dubbing, Ren was spoken by Santiago Ziesmer (including SpongeBob SquarePants ) and Stimpy by Oliver Feld (including Jerry Seinfeld ).

Almost all episodes of the show differ in terms of the setting and the background story of the main characters. Ren and Stimpy are sometimes penniless vagabonds, but in other episodes they lead a life with middle-class circumstances. Often they are also aware of their role as well-known cartoon characters.

main characters

Ren

Ren Hoëk is a pessimistic , asthmatic and hyperactive pointing Chihuahua who always gets into dangerous situations. Its national origin is not clear, but seems to be in Europe. Ren denies his adventures in various roles: As Commander Hoëk , he explores space with the help of his cadet Stimpy . As a hero in green tights, Robin Hoëk invites you to adventures in the Sherwood Forest , and as Marlin Hoëk he acts as an expert on the most dangerous animals in the world. Ren is very proud, choleric and convinced of his superiority over Stimpy, but emotionally highly dependent on him, which he only admits in extreme situations. His dearest desire is to have large pectoral muscles. He also collects incurable diseases (in glasses), fossilized dinosaur excrement and opera records, as can be seen in the episode “Sven Hoëk”.

Stimpy

Stimpson "Stimpy" J. Katzwinkel is the second main character next to Ren and forms the optimistic opposite pole in the team . He is characterized by idiocy, indolence, naivety, debility and good-naturedness. Stimpy is the loyal soul at Ren's side, e.g. B. as a reliable and combative cadet. He prefers to leave the thinking to his Chihuahua friend Ren and is relatively willing to put up with Ren's often abusive treatment.

His absolute favorite song is "jubel-jubel-freu-freu" (happy-happy-joy-joy) by Stinky Wizzleteats. "Jubel-jubel-freu-freu" (abbreviated "jubel-freu") is also often used by Stimpy as a cry of joy and, according to the series, comes from his ancestor, the Stimpy-Saurus.

censorship

The episode Man's Best Friend was withheld entirely. Allegedly, John Kricfalusi was later fired because of this episode. However, it was later shown completely in the series "Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon". Two other stories ( Out West , Powdered Toast Man ) were initially shown but were later removed from the program. In Out West allegedly because they sang happily about hanging, in Powdered Toast Man because it is too political. However, these episodes could be seen in full in German. In addition, other cartoons were shortened, such as the cartoon Fake Dad . This 20 minute episode was cut down to 10 minutes by Nickelodeon. Another example is Ren & Stimpy's pilot Big House Blues in episode 8. Among other things, a scene was cut out in which Ren, after kissing Stimpy in his sleep, runs away and drinks hysterically from a toilet bowl. An excerpt from this scene can still be seen in the opening credits.
