German National Foundation
The German National Foundation is a foundation under civil law based in Weimar .
General
According to its own information, the non-partisan, independent and non-profit foundation was founded in 1993 against the background of the German reunification of Federal Chancellor a. D. Helmut Schmidt and some of his friends like Michael Otto , Hermann Josef Abs , Gerd Bucerius and others in Weimar. The office is located in Hamburg . The foundation wants to promote the growing together of East and West Germany . It wants to raise awareness of the national identity of the Germans and to strengthen the idea of the German nation as part of a united Europe . It deals with current policy issues of the nation.

financing
The assets come mainly from the founders' private funds and donations. It is about 8 million euros. Public funds are not used. The foundation's projects are financed from capital gains and other donations.
Grants
The foundation has been awarding the German National Prize and the Richard von Weizsäcker Prize annually since 1997 . In addition to the annual conference, lectures and discussions are held on fundamental topics. Schoolchildren from European countries meet at the international youth projects (SchulBrücke Weimar and SchulBrücke Europa).
Publications
The foundation issues publications on various topics, including "Berlin - what is the capital worth to us?", Published by Leske & Budrich in 2003, or the documentation of the 2008 annual conference on the topic of "How national should the economy in Germany be?" .
