history

The beginnings as a health resort go back at least to the Middle Ages , as the first documentary mention of a spring at this location was recorded in 1141. In the 17th century, Paul de Sorbait , court physician in Vienna, reported in his work Praxios medicae (1680) about the national fame of mineral water.

The best-known three sources of Rohitsch-Sauerbrunnen are: the Tempelquelle, Styriaquelle and Donatiquelle. In the first third of the 20th century, several million bottles of water were filled and sold from these three source points. According to the analysis by Hotter in Graz (1902), it is a matter of sodium-magnesium-hydrogen carbonate-sulfate mineralization of water that circulates in crevices of the andesite rock lying underground . In addition, other sources used have come down to us in the literature: the Alpha, Beta and Gamma wells, the Josef well, Moritz Bohrbrunnen, Fröhlich'sche Bohrbrunnen, Ferdinand's well, Gotthart's well and the forest spring.

In the middle of the 19th century, private individuals built many villas that still shape the cityscape today. In 1840 the Austrian Major General Conrad von Mederer, from Freiburg im Breisgau, died there during a stay at a spa .

economy

Spa tourism has a high cultural and economic importance for the small town. The spa has made a name for itself since the 17th century thanks to the thermal baths and the beneficial mineral water from several springs. The drinking fountain system with the classical building ensemble as well as the trade in the mineral water Donat Mg are an important factor for the city.

Glassblowing has existed in Rogaška Slatina since 1655 . The Steklarna Rogaška glass factory, founded in 1927, produces high quality glassware. In Yugoslavia it was already considered the largest crystal factory in the state at the time. Unique pieces from the production are used by the Slovenian government as a state gift. Around 90% of the more than 1200 different products are exported. The organ building Anton Škrabl ( Orglarstvo Škrabl ) also contributes to the economic and cultural profile of the city .
