content

Rommel describes the last seven months of the life of the German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel from March to October 1944 . A quote from Hannah Arendt is displayed in the opening credits .

- Hannah Arendt

The television film begins on the day of Rommel's death with an excerpt from the conversation between him and Generals Wilhelm Burgdorf and Ernst Maisel . In this conversation, the generals presented incriminating material to Rommel and gave him the choice of either killing himself or answering the People's Court . After this scene, Erwin Rommel's last months of life from March 1944 are told in a retrospective in chronological order. During this time Erwin Rommel is responsible for the Atlantic Wall and is supposed to prevent the Allies from marching in from the west. He lost himself in the myth of the greatest general of all time, founded by the Nazis, and found himself in a conflict between loyalty to the Nazi regime and his own conscience. The film ends shortly after the conversation that was shown at the beginning of the film. Erwin Rommel says goodbye to his family and drives off with the two generals from Berlin in a car to kill himself.
