Course of the road

The Murtal Schnellstraße S 36 is an expressway in Styria and an important north-south axis in Austria . The S 36 begins at the St. Michael junction as a direct extension of the Semmering expressway S 6 and currently leads to Judenburg- West.
In connection with the S 6, the Friesacher Straße B 317 via the Perchauer Sattel (east of the Neumarkter Sattel) and the Klagenfurt expressway S 37, it represents an alternative connection to the southern motorway from Vienna to Carinthia.
In terms of road traffic law, the S 36 has the status of a motorway and requires a vignette or toll . The state-owned motorway operator ASFINAG is responsible for operation and maintenance .
history
construction
The S 36 was only completed in its previous dimensions late at the end of the 20th century, mainly in the 1980s. It had already been expelled with the amendment to the Federal Roads Act 1971/74.
Before the completion of individual sections of the Murtal expressway, today's state roads were run parallel to the S 36 as the B 336 Murtal replacement road .
From the beginning at the St. Michael junction, the S 36 leads via Knittelfeld and Zeltweg to Judenburg . The Judenburg West exit forms the end of the expressway.

Current expansion
An extension of the expressway in the Murtal to Scheifling is currently in progress. It was planned since 1995. Subsequently, a high-level connection to Carinthia was to be established with the planned Klagenfurt expressway S 37 .
Around 2005 the Ministry of Transport carried out a strategic review of the expansion of the B 317. In November 2010 this extension, the start of construction of which was imminent, was postponed until further notice.
In May 2013, work began on expanding the S 36 in the section between St. Georgen ob Judenburg and Scheifling (B 317). In the first section, the existing St. Georgen - Unzmarkt route was adapted over a length of approx. 7.5 km and continuously expanded to two lanes in each direction (still known as B 317 , km D7.8 – D12.8), and one 610 m long underground line built in St. Georgen (completion at the end of 2015, already designated as S 36), the 950 m long underground line Unzmarkt will be built by 2020 (breakthrough December 2018). The exact further expansion up to the Scheiflinger furnace is still unclear.
For the 12.5 km long section Judenburg - St. Georgen (B 317) the planning was restarted due to extensive project changes, and in November 2016 a new route variant was presented, which provides for an extension close to the existing one with three underground routes. August 2010 a federal road planning area was designated here. Realization is not
expected until 2023 at the earliest .opening | Route section | length |
---|---|---|
2015 | St. Georgen underground line | 0.61 km |
St. Georgen - Unzmarkt | 3.4 km | |
2020 | Unzmarkt underground line | 0.95 km |
