action

The children's book illustrator Clara loses her fiancé Ben in a fatal traffic accident. Even two years after his death, their creativity is still completely blocked. Driven by her friends, she decides to turn her back on her isolated existence on her parents' farm in the Brandenburg province and dare to start over by moving back to Berlin. While her publisher is putting her under increasing pressure to draw a new volume from her award-winning Raupe Rieke series and thus also confronting Clara with financial difficulties, her best friend Katja urges her on various dates, which however fail - also because they are far from Ben want to leave behind. In order to stay close to this, Clara writes SMS messages in the form of small, thoughtful diary entries to the old cell phone number of her deceased friend.

However, Ben's phone number has since been reassigned to Mark, a journalist at a large Berlin daily newspaper, who receives the messages with growing interest but does not answer. His long-term relationship with Fiona is at a dead end: While she is pushing for children and a common home, Mark cannot and does not really want to imagine a future with her. When the bond breaks and Fiona breaks up with him, Mark intensifies his search for Clara, whom he meets during the break at a performance of Orpheus and Eurydice in the opera and asks out of hand for a date. When they meet again for the first time in Clara's local Gockel, he feels so pressured to do everything right that he almost pisses off Clara and asks her for another chance.

Clara, who thinks she has met Mark by chance, finally falls in love with him. Mark reciprocates her feelings, but struggles with his remorse, triggered by Clara's text message, which she unconsciously sends to him by continuing to direct it to Ben's old cell phone number. Mark finds support from the successful Schlager singer Henriette Boot, who asks him during an interview for his employer to stand up for his feelings. However, when Clara discovers after a night together that Mark has allegedly stalked her because of the secretly received messages, she ends the acquaintance. Only with the help of Katja and Mark's friend David can both find the courage for a more honest new beginning. The creative new beginning is symbolically represented by the transformation of your children's book caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly.

background

SMS für Dich is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by the author Sofie Cramer , which was published by Rowohlt Verlag in 2009 , and is also the debut feature film by actress Karoline Herfurth . The production of the material was offered to Herfurth, who had already directed the short film Mittelkleiner Mensch in 2012 , by Warner Bros boss Willi Geike, after he had previously secured the exploitation rights of the book and with Herfurth about a potential directorial debut on the set of Helmut Dietls Zettl (2012) spoke. The actress justified her acceptance with the plot of the novel, in which “everything was in it”, which she expects from a film: “It has a strong emotional foundation that is very serious and profound. You can be humorous and romantic on it. You can have a great love story with comedic elements that creates just the right balance that I wanted. "

The majority of SMS for you was created on various motifs in and around Herfurth's place of residence, Berlin .

Herfurth first received a script in October 2014. She described the production as a love story with an emphasis on "the romantic rather than the comedic part". SMS for you is "a little more emotionally oriented" compared to other romantic comedies. On this point, she compared the project with American-British comedies such as Harry and Sally (1989), Schlaflos in Seattle (1993), em @ il für Dich (1998) and Notting Hill (1999), which she did not classify as "purely comedic" feel, but who have "a seriousness and warmth of heart". Herfurth described the cast of the film as her "absolute dream cast". In order to be able to engage the actors, they had to "dig in a lot" according to their own statements. The crew also declared Herfurth a "luxury team".

In contrast to the novel, the film is set in Berlin . The film was therefore shot from October 12 to December 3, 2015 in the federal capital and in parts of Brandenburg . In the run-up to the shooting, Herfurth and her team had prepared intensively for their tasks for more than two months. Filmed at the Westhafen in Berlin , the Friedrichsbrücke , the Berlin Cathedral and on the Spree , places with which the native of Berlin Herfurth claims to have a lot in common and at the same time show "the colorful Berlin". On the set, Herfurth was supported by an assistant director and a producer in her dual role as leading actress and director.

Reviews

Karoline Herfurth was nominated for her performance for the Bambi 2016 .

The film received mixed reviews. Bert Rebhandl from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung found that the film “reached the level of many American role models” and described the production as a “milestone”, which in its own way convinced “how it makes mass tastes appear individual, and at a crucial point also reveals a surprising amount of self-reflection, without putting a big burden on the primary target audience. " Odds meter editor Antje Wessels judged that Herfurth with SMS was " not just an outstanding directorial debut for you , but also the long-overdue breakthrough for you the German RomCom ”delivered. The production is "an enchanting balancing act between lovingly reserved romance and multifaceted comedy, which one is only too happy to forgive for the small weaknesses in the technical execution".

Christoph Petersen from filmstarts.de awarded 4.5 out of 5 stars and said in his conclusion: “Very big romantic cinema - SMS for you absolutely doesn’t need to hide from its Hollywood role model, Sleepless in Seattle !” Annalena Schieber from the women's magazine Brigitte said that the film sends out a message that is as clear as it is inspiring: “Never lose hope that everything will be fine [,] and dare to start over, even if you are going through a difficult time. Perseverance is worth it. Always! ”In her conclusion she attested to the film and Karoline Herfurth's directorial debut:“ Despite a few shortcomings, SMS offers you romantic, soulful and entertaining entertainment cinema. Even if there is still room for improvement, Herfurth's directorial debut is definitely a success. "

Tobias Sunderdiek, editor at the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung , found in his review: “Despite the mix of kitchen psychology, the well-worn man-woman clichés of Matthias Schweighöfer or Til Schweiger and the ZDF - Herzkino- Trash content, SMS scores with one for you well-performing acting ensemble that makes the film appear far less affected than it appears on paper ”. The German Press Agency saw a “film that turned out to be a bit too smooth at times”, but “an all in all convincing directorial debut”: “The wonderful ensemble of actors [...], the really touching and only partly too kitschy story, the Poppy, but mostly appropriate musical flanking will surely attract a larger audience to this film, which must be enjoyed on a big screen. "David Siems from epd Film awarded 1 out of 5 stars for" tried and tested romantic comedy off the shelf with a superficial one Portion of heartbreak and all kinds of cozy rock atmosphere ”.
