The Uelsen district mayor's office was created . In 1970 , the Uelsen community developed from this. When it was founded, it had ten parishes. This number was later reduced through incorporation. As a result of the administrative and territorial reform in Lower Saxony , the new joint municipality Uelsen was formed on March 1, 1974 from now seven member municipalities.

coat of arms

Blazon : "In silver three (1: 2) green holly leaves, accompanied by seven green balls: two at the top each placed on a pole, arranged 1: 2 in the base of the shield."

The area of today's Uelsen parish belongs to Twente and was the mission area of the hll in the early 8th century. Werenfried and Willibrord, who probably also founded the original parish church and baptistery in Uelsen. The parish therefore belonged to the diocese of Utrecht and was transferred in 1131 to the Stft St. Peter in Utrecht. A branch church was founded in Wilsum. In the High Middle Ages, the Twente area around Uelsen belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine, came into the hands of the Counts of Bentheim in the course of the formation of territories and remained part of the Lower County of Bentheim until the end of the old empire.

The seven municipalities of Getelo, Gölenkamp, Halle, Itterbeck, Uelsen, Wielen and Wilsum merged in 1974 to form the Uelsen municipality, with all the others except Wilsum belonging to the Uelsen parish. The seven member communities are symbolized by the seven spheres, which in turn allude to the coat of arms of the Counts and Princes of Bentheim or today's county of Bentheim: the golden Bentheim pennies in the red field.

Three green holly leaves in a silver shield have been used in different positions (2: 1, 1: 2) by both the political and the ecclesiastical community of Uelsen since the 17th century (coat of arms relief on the town hall, around 1880; weather vanes on the church tower and choir roof , after 1683). They are said to be the coat of arms of the von Niehoff family from Uelsen, whose most important member, Johann Niehoff, died in the service of the Dutch East India Company in Madagascar. When the municipality took over the coat of arms, the consonance of Uelsen and pods or pod crabs (= holly, ilex) should have been stimulating, although the place name, which was handed down as “Uelsten” in 1177, has nothing to do with “pods”, but rather after Abels is to be interpreted as "settlement near the sources".

Green and silver are the traditional colors of the old Uelsen municipal coat of arms.

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Ulf-Dietrich Korn .

Partner communities

The partner municipality of the Uelsen municipality has been Tubbergen in the Netherlands since 2007 . Tubbergen has also been a partner municipality of the municipality of Uelsen since 1981.

economy

Agriculture is still of great importance in the joint municipality of Uelsen . In addition to the farms, there are numerous service companies for agriculture, especially in the areas of animal feed, cattle trade and agricultural engineering . Mineral resources are extracted at various points in the joint community, especially gravel , sand and natural gas . In addition, there are larger industrial and commercial areas in Uelsen, Itterbeck and Wilsum, where mainly medium-sized companies and craft businesses have settled. The most important industries here are metal construction , wood construction , construction companies and heating and air conditioning technology. There is also a wide range of retail and services. WKS Textilveredlungs GmbH in Wilsum and Peters Stahlbau GmbH in Itterbeck are among the largest employers in the municipality .

Another important mainstay of the local economy is tourism , especially in the Uelsen resort (including the Grafschaft Bentheim holiday park ), in Wilsum (including the Wilsumer Berge holiday resort ) and in Itterbeck (the planned Itterbeck holiday and leisure park ). In the course of extensive investment activities, the indoor and outdoor swimming pool in Uelsen was converted into a combined swimming pool in Waldbald Uelsen.

The unemployment rate in the Uelsen municipality was 3.9% in August 2011.
