St. Corona am Wechsel (also Sankt Corona am Wechsel ) is a municipality with 392 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Neunkirchen district in Lower Austria .

geography

St. Corona am Wechsel is located in the industrial district in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 8.75 km², 72% of the area is forested.

The only cadastral community is St. Corona am Wechsel.

history

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province . The community gained notoriety in the COVID-19 pandemic because of the word "Corona" in its name.

According to the data of the 2001 census , 95.1% of the population were Roman Catholic and 1.9% Protestant , 2.7% of the population had no religious denomination.

economy

In 2001 there were 21 non-agricultural workplaces; according to the 1999 survey, there were 29 agricultural and forestry holdings. According to the 2001 census, the number of people in employment at home was 173; the employment rate was 48%.

Sports

Directly in the center of the village was the valley station of an old 1-seater chairlift, which in winter, together with a 4-seater chairlift and a double drag lift, opened up a small ski area on Kampstein and in summer Lower Austria's only classic summer toboggan run .

At the end of the 2013/14 winter season, lift operations were discontinued by the state of Lower Austria for cost reasons; the chairlift and chairlift were demolished in summer 2014. The summer toboggan run was also removed.

The area of ​​the Hannesen I drag lift, which was part of the former St. Corona ski area, was retained and is now known as the Simas lifts St. Corona-St. Peter continued.

A family ski area has been available in Unternberg, southeast of St. Corona, since December 2014. A new summer toboggan run was opened in 2015 and a motor skills park was opened in 2016.
