Sapoljarny ( Russian Заполярный ) is an urban-type settlement in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug ( Russia ) with 1024 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located on the tundra of the northern part of the West Siberian lowlands , about 320 km as the crow flies east of the district administrative center Salekhard . It is located on the right bank of the river Nyda , which flows into the Obbusen , about 50 km from the mouth and a little below the confluence of the left tributary Chejacha.
Sapoljarny belongs to Nadym Rajon and is about 120 km north-northeast from its administrative center Nadym .
history
The history of the place begins with the arrival of the first construction workers from Tjumentransgas on December 18, 1984, who were supposed to build a pumping station on the natural gas pipeline Jamburg - Jelez , which was under construction . The pumping station went into operation on July 25, 1986; the first permanent residential buildings were also completed at this time. On June 3, 1998, Sapolyarny received urban-type settlement status. The name refers to the location of the place behind the Arctic Circle (Russian sa poljarnym krugom ).

Economy and Infrastructure
The pumping station on the Jamburg - Jelez natural gas pipeline, today operated by Gazprom Transgas Jugorsk on this section, is a local feature . The settlement is also a logistical center for the exploitation and further exploration of the Medweschje natural gas reservoir .
Road connection exists to the settlement of Pangody located 75 km to the south , where the railway line and the road between Novy Urengoy and Nadym run.
