From its elevation to the city in 1941, Sawety Ilyicha was part of Sovetskaya Gawan.

From the opening of the Postovaya military airfield west of the town center in 1943, Savety Ilyicha also became the location of the Soviet Army ; later facilities of the Pacific Fleet , such as coastal defense batteries, were built .

In 1960 the place received the status of an independent urban-type settlement.
