The approximately 20 kilometer long Schlatbach , formerly also Slaatbach , is a right tributary of the Stepenitz in the Brandenburg countryside of Prignitz .

course

The stream originates below the terminal moraine of the nature sanctuary Ruhn Hills about 9 kilometers west of Putlitz between the villages Grenzheim and Hülsebeck, both for Putlitz-Berge belong. On its course to the south through a consistently rural area of the Prignitz, the Schlatbach does not touch any city. It flows through the municipality of Pirow , leaves the village of Reetz of the municipality of Gülitz-Reetz on the right and flows through the villages of Gulow (municipality of Groß Pankow ) and Groß Linde (town of Perleberg ). A few hundred meters southeast of Groß Linde and around 3 kilometers northeast of Perleberg, the water-rich stream flows into the Stepenitz, which is a right tributary of the Elbe .

Dismantling of weirs

The Schlatbach is a largely undeveloped and near-natural creek, which is of great importance for the renaturation in connection with the so-called Elblachs 2000 program . The Brandenburg state project aims to reintroduce salmon and sea trout in the Elbe and its tributaries. The Stepenitz system plays a central role in the measures. One means of renaturing the rivers is to dismantle dams and weirs .

In 2001, a weir near the Gramzower Mühle bridge (location in Perleberg between Gulow and Groß Linde) was replaced by a slat in the Schlatbach , which overcomes a height difference of almost 2 meters. A basin structure was created with stone bars, which allows the fish to migrate even in summer when the water is low . In the upper and lower water of the Gleite, artificial spawning grounds were created by adding coarse gravel .

As early as 2000, the Groß Linde mill weir was dismantled into a bottom slide.

The country released a total of 105,000 sea trout hatchlings in the Schlatbach by 2005. It is recorded as a success that 130 salmon and 173 sea trout have returned to the Stepenitz system to spawn since 2002 (as of 2008).

Schlatbach nature reserve

The stream is home to the particularly strictly protected otters ( Lutra lutra ), kingfishers ( Alcedo attis ), mountain wagtails ( Motacilla cinerea ), wood sandpipers ( Tringa ochropus ) and cranes ( Grus grus ). In 2006 the ordinance on the Schlatbach nature reserve was issued.
