Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels
Science Fiction: The 100 Best Novels: An English-language selection, 1949–1984 is a 1985 book by the British science fiction editor David Pringle . It contains a chronologically ordered compilation of short essays on 100 science fiction novels that were published between 1949 and 1984. At the Locus Awards 1986 it came in 6th place in the nonfiction / reference category .
The selection is largely subjective and is limited to works by Anglo-Saxon authors (as indicated in the subtitle) with the exclusion of novels that are more likely to be assigned to the genre of fantasy or horror literature. The underlying conception of science fiction also requires that the content and forms of representation are in principle realistic, even if the prerequisites for the narratives are completely speculative. The selection was based on a list of 99 titles published by Pringle in March 1984 in No. 20 of the SF magazine Foundation . In 1988 Pringle wrote a similarly structured book for the field of fantasy.
A continuation of Pringle's compilation for the period from 1985 to 2010 with 101 selected novels was presented in 2012 by Damien Broderick and Paul di Filippo. Pringle wrote a preface to this sequel.
