action

The effects of an endless drug war in Mexico have ruled the border strip between the US state of Arizona and Mexico for decades . During the storming of a safehouse of the cartel idealistic discovered FBI -Agentin Kate Macer with her team Hostage Rescue dozens dead bodies that were hidden behind plasterboard walls. Two policemen are killed in a booby trap in a shed. Manuel Diaz, the boss of the Mexican drug cartel, was behind the attack. As conditions worsen, CIA agent Matt Graver is supposed to assemble a special unit to bring Diaz and his boss Alarcón to account.

Graver recruits Kate for his task force. Her first assignment takes her to the Mexican border town of Juarez . There they are supposed to transfer Diaz's brother Guillermo from custody of the Mexican judiciary to the USA with the opaque mercenary Alejandro Gillick. The Americans are accompanied by armed pickups from the Mexican Federal Police . On the way back, members of the drug mafia used a traffic jam at the border to get their hands on the prisoners. The escort, consisting of elite soldiers from the Delta Force and Texas Rangers, thwarted the action and killed the gangsters.

On their return, Alejandro and Matt interrogate some Mexican migrants who are familiar with the border strip. Through this, and also through the torture of Guillermo Diaz by Alejandro, the investigators learn of a secret tunnel that the cartel uses to smuggle drugs into the United States. Since Alejandro and Matt's approach remains opaque to Kate, she confronts them both. Matt finally explains to her that the missions are trying to impair Diaz's drug business in such a way that he is called to his boss, the drug lord Fausto Alarcón, in order to find his whereabouts.

In the next mission, they track the money laundering from Diaz to a bank and freeze his accounts after the arrest of a money courier. However, Diaz cannot prove money laundering as never more than $ 9,000 in cash was deposited per day for several years. Kate still wants Diaz to be prosecuted by the criminal authorities on the basis of this evidence, whereupon Matt rejects this approach. Kate's intervention with her superiors doesn't help either. They explain to her that, despite successful drug raids, the situation has not improved in recent years and that the decisions in this case therefore come from a higher authority.

Frustrated by the way Alejandro and Matt work, Kate and her partner Reggie visit a country pub in the evening. Reggie's former police colleague Ted gets along well with Kate. The two dance wildly and finally leave the pub together. When they are about to have sex in Kate's apartment, she notices that Ted has the same elastic in his pocket as the one found when the money courier was arrested. Kate becomes suspicious and tries to get to her gun, which Ted prevents her. In the ensuing fight, Ted gains the upper hand and strangles Kate. Alejandro appears at the last moment and saves Kate. Ted is then beaten up by Alejandro, and Graver threatens Ted to have him transferred to a Mexican prison, which would result in his death, and to forward the whereabouts of Ted's ex-wife and children to the cartel. Ted collapses. During the interrogation of Ted, it turns out that he works for the cartel and should find out something about the investigation.

The next day, Graver and Alejandro prepare to storm the smuggling tunnel. They are already monitoring Diaz with a drone and are waiting for Alarcón to summon him. Kate and Reggie should also take part in the operation. Now she realizes that she was only recruited because the CIA is not allowed to conduct any operation within the United States without the involvement of a domestic authority. During the night, the special unit begins the attack on the tunnel. During the operation, Kate sees Alejandro shoot a drug dealer on the Mexican side and take hostage the corrupt Mexican policeman Silvio, who works as a drug courier. When Kate confronts Alejandro, he shoots her bullet-resistant vest twice and she goes down. Alejandro escapes with the policeman and the police vehicle.

Back on the US side, Kate learns from Matt that the mission was used as a distraction so that Alejandro can get through the tunnel unnoticed to Mexico to pursue Diaz. Alejandro's order to assassinate the Mexican drug lord Fausto Alarcón was to restore the supremacy of the Colombian Medellín cartel . The authorities hope that this will restore a certain degree of order once a single cartel controls the drug trade. Kate also learns that Alarcón is responsible for the murder of Alejandro's wife and daughter and that Alejandro's daughter is therefore seeking revenge at all costs.

In Mexico, Alejandro and Silvio stop Diaz's black Mercedes. After Diaz got out, Alejandro shoots him in the leg and shoots Silvio. Then he drives with Diaz to Fausto Alarcón's villa. There he shoots the guards, kills Diaz and goes to the house where drug lord Alarcón is having dinner with his family. After a brief chat, Alejandro takes revenge for his family by shooting Alarcón's wife and two sons in front of his eyes before killing Alarcón too.

The next morning, Alejandro appears again at Kate's and asks her to sign a report confirming that the operation was carried out correctly. When Kate refuses, Alejandro holds her own pistol to her head, whereupon Kate reluctantly signs. Then he dismantles Kate's pistol and leaves the house. Kate puts them back together and runs out onto the balcony to get one last chance to shoot Alejandro. He turns to her, but she drops the gun and Alejandro walks away.

production

Back in December 2013, it was confirmed that Denis Villeneuve would bring out a drama about the Mexican border called Sicario . Originally a male protagonist was planned. But finally Villeneuve was able to hire Emily Blunt in April 2014 . Shortly thereafter, Benicio del Toro followed, and in May of the same year Josh Brolin and Victor Garber . Lions Gate Entertainment also acquired the film rights in May 2014 . In August 2014 it was confirmed that Jóhann Jóhannsson would compose the music for the film.

Director Denis Villeneuve and his main cast at the premiere of the film as part of the 2015 Cannes International Film Festival

After its premiere on May 19, 2015 at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival in six cinemas in the USA, the film was released with restrictions on September 18, 2015. Sicario was released in German cinemas on October 1, 2015, and was shown nationwide in the USA on October 2.

According to the film, Sicario is the name given to contract killers for the drug cartels. The term goes back to the Sicarii .

Villeneuve tried very hard to present the tactical / military scenes as authentically as possible and had an expert advice on set, including from former FBI and CIA agents, special forces and private security experts . In an interview he stated that the agents reacted with secrecy when he asked them about some of the riskier tactical approaches used by the Sicario characters (the secret mission in Juarez, for example). When they said, "Sir, I can't answer your question," he knew he was on the right track. Villeneuve also exposed himself to personal risk when he and some staff wanted to explore the darker side of the city of Juarez.

reception

Sicario has grossed $ 80 million worldwide with a production cost of $ 30 million. Of this, 46.5 million were in the domestic market and 32.5 million in the foreign markets. In Germany the film was distributed by Studiocanal and in Austria by Constantin and grossed around 2.4 million and 0.3 million dollars respectively.

The film was largely acclaimed by critics. He has an average rating of 92% at Rotten Tomatoes , based on 259 reviews, and adorns himself with the site's “Certified Fresh” seal. The summarized consensus says that Sicario is a "suspenseful" thriller, the "outstanding" representations of Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro and has far more in mind than "sensational set pieces". At Metacritic , the average rating is 82%, based on 48 reviews.

Carsten Baumgardt from the Filmstarts editorial team gives it 4 out of 5 stars and praises Sicario as a "rousing, incredibly tightly staged and in the best way ambivalent thriller". Baumgardt particularly emphasizes Emily Blunt's portrayal, because as Kate Macer, she shows “not only hardness, but also vulnerability and so the viewer remains on her side even when she loses all orientation on her journey into the heart of darkness and ultimately hardly can still distinguish between good and bad. ”The Outnow editors, in turn, believe that Emily Blunt is“ a bit too passive ”and is“ repeatedly pushed aside by her colleagues ”. The pictures and the soundtrack are "breathtaking".

Gerhard Midding from epd Film names Benicio del Toro's figure as the most fascinating in the “confusing moral mixture”, as the actor gives her “that sublime Janus-headedness that is believed to be both the worst and the best. His unscrupulous professionalism is broken by the sporadic flash of caring humanity. " Cinema sums up Villeneuve's film is a" relentlessly realistic thriller about the drug war in Mexico ". He shows "a terrible reality and asks questions without pretending to know the answers". The film service describes Sicario as a "[k] omplex, visually great thriller drama that brilliantly explores the moral gray areas in the fight against crime."

Patrick Wellinski from Deutschlandfunk expressed himself rather negatively : Sicario was definitely a “nice action film”, was “in the end just another drug film that just pretends to work on reality.” The confusion of the situation is said to be hectic and violent Tear swivel illustrated; the drug lords themselves remained clichés and two-dimensional transfers. Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel criticized that Villeneuve's drug war inventory stumbled into the numerous holes in the story. Emily Blunt tries "with deer looks between anger and panic" to save what can be saved. But her game also remains thin because Sheridan has no backstory for the obviously tough, but also lonely and frustrated law enforcement officer.

Sequel and trilogy

On September 22nd, 2015, before the theatrical release in Germany, work on a sequel was announced due to good reviews. Emily Blunt (as Kate Macer) was no longer involved. As in the first part, the scriptwriter was Taylor Sheridan. The release of Sicario: Day of the Soldado in the US took place on June 29, 2018. The film opened in Germany on July 19.

In addition, Sicario represents the first part of Taylor Sheridan's American Frontier trilogy. The other films in this trilogy are Hell or High Water from 2016 and Wind River from 2017.
