SkyWork Airlines was a Swiss regional airline based in Belp and based at Bern-Belp Airport .

history

SkyWork Airlines was founded in 1983 as a two-man company and initially operated primarily as a flight school for higher education. From 1989, with the purchase of the first Cessna Citation II, the focus shifted to the transportation of private and business customers - SkyWork Airlines became an air taxi and charter airline . In 2003 the first Dornier 328-100 and in 2008 a De Havilland DHC-8 -400 were added to the fleet.

The first scheduled flights started in 2009. Daniel Borer took over the company in 2010. In August 2011, the company took over the tour operator Aaretal Reisen . However, this was sold again in July 2014 because SkyWork Airlines wanted to concentrate on its core business.

In October 2013 the previous managing director Tomislav Lang left the company and handed over the scepter to Rolf Hartleb. In the course of this, a new partnership with MHS Aviation was announced. This should contribute to synergy effects, for example both SkyWork and MHS operated the Dornier 328. In December 2013 it was announced that several company executives wanted to leave the company or had already left the company. The planned partnership with MHS Aviation was not implemented; SkyWork continues to fly as an independent airline.

In July 2014 it was announced that SkyWork, contrary to previous plans, also wanted to sell its last of three De Havilland DHC-8-400s and to cut staff accordingly. They also wanted to switch from central London City Airport to the cheaper London Southend Airport in autumn . For the 2014/2015 winter flight schedule, some frequencies were also reduced compared to the previous year. In addition, SkyWork announced that CEO Rolf Hartleb should reduce his workload “for reasons of age” and be replaced by Martin Inäbnit (formerly employed by Crossair ). The new CEO initiated extensive consolidation measures.

In July 2016 SkyWork received its first Saab 2000 , up to five Saab 2000s should replace the Dornier 328-100 by the beginning of 2018 . With the aircraft change, a change in the design of the aircraft had also been announced. Even the first Saab 2000 flew in white, with a red Swiss cross on the tail, the company name on the fuselage and the company logo on the engines.

On October 16, 2017, the Federal Office for Civil Aviation FOCA limited the operating license for SkyWork Airlines AG to the end of the month for economic reasons, because the airline was no longer able to guarantee the financing of the 2017/18 winter flight schedule. Skywork suspended flight operations on October 29, 2017, but was able to resume the flight plan on November 1, 2017 with an unlimited operating license.

From January 2, 2018, SkyWork flew troops and equipment to Pristina twice a week from Basel for Swisscoy ; every other week with a stop in Sarajevo . The order was previously carried out by ASL Airlines Switzerland .

On the evening of August 29, 2018, flight operations ceased after ongoing negotiations with potential new partners were declared to have failed. The operating license was then returned to the Swiss Federal Office for Civil Aviation; at the same time bankruptcy proceedings were initiated. According to media reports, around 11,000 mostly Swiss passengers are affected, for whom an agreement on repatriation has been made with various airlines. At the beginning of September, the last aircraft (a Dornier 328) that the company still owned itself was sold. Dornier had its last flight in spring 2018, after which only six leased Saab 2000s were used by Skywork.

Destinations

SkyWork Airlines flew from Bern-Belp Airport to 18 European destinations in summer 2017. In the German-speaking area these were Berlin , Hamburg , Cologne / Bonn , Munich , Sylt , Usedom and Vienna . Holiday destinations on the Mediterranean Sea were Elba , Ibiza , Corsica , Mallorca , Menorca , Sardinia ( Cagliari and Olbia ) and Zadar . Also were Amsterdam , London City and the Channel Island Jersey in the flight plan. Charter flights were also carried out.

Seven destinations were flown to in the winter of 2017/2018: Amsterdam , Berlin-Tegel , Hamburg , London-City , Munich , Palma de Mallorca and Vienna .

In the summer of 2018, in addition to the destinations of the summer flight plan 2017, there were also flights to Brac and Graz . In addition, charter flights to Preveza were carried out on behalf of Aaretal Reisen and Belpmoos Reisen .

Flights from Basel

In the summer of 2017, SkyWork flew from Basel to Jersey , London-City , Usedom , Sylt and Vienna . In the winter of 2017/18, Vienna was served 6 times a week.

After Swiss had given up Basel-Mulhouse Airport as a hub at the end of May 2015 , SkyWork wanted to offer flights from Basel to London with a Saab 2000 from Darwin Airline on July 19, 2015 ; the flight should continue to fly to Bern after a short break in Basel . SkyWork flew to London once before June 2014, but gave up the route because of the high fees in London. The operation should be profitable with the larger Saab 2000. The London City was up to twice a day from Bern via Basel approached. After the start of flights to Vienna , the Basel - London City route was discontinued.

In addition to Vienna , the 2018 summer flight schedule also included Sylt and Usedom .

Partnerships with other airlines

In December 2016, SkyWork Airlines agreed an interlining partnership with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines . In 2016 SkyWork flew to Amsterdam four times a week . An increase in frequency was planned for summer 2017.

Market away from Bern

For a long time the company has been looking for opportunities to grow outside of its home market. Since Air Berlin ended , there have been no more direct flights between Graz and Berlin-Tegel , which would have created an opportunity for SkyWork. So that no new base had to be opened, from the end of March 2018 she flew six times a week from Bern to Berlin , from there to Graz and back via Berlin to Bern.
