action
The Stamper family clan, made up of the head of the Henry Stamper family, his son Hank, the other son Joe Ben, and their wives and children, run the rough and tough logging and timber haulage business. The work-hungry Stampers are proud and indomitable and defend their independence to the point of blood. When one day the country's high union officials decide to go on a nationwide strike, they all follow suit, except for the non-union and liberally organized Stampers. Trouble is inevitable. After a senior union official tries to persuade the "strike breakers" to give in, he gets an unfriendly rebuff from the head of the family. Then the signs point to hard confrontation.
After Hank's half-brother Leeland Stamper, thrown off the rails after the death of his mother, returns to the clan, the situation deteriorates dramatically. The Stampers are violently summoned to give up on all sides of their neighbors, the city population is threatened with bankruptcy, but the Stampers remain hard on others and ruthless to themselves. Henry Stamper focuses his family on the tasks ahead with hard drill, a contract has been concluded it has to be fulfilled, no matter what the cost. Even accidents and acts of sabotage do not throw the family out of balance. Shortly before the order is fulfilled, the big accident happens after all. The head of the family, Henry, who defiantly forces himself back to work after a barely surviving fall, is hit hard by one half of the tree when Hanks tries to cut a tree, and his right arm is shattered. At the same time, brother Joe Ben gets stuck under a huge tree trunk on the nearby river and can no longer free himself on his own. While Leeland is transporting his father to the hospital, Hank tries everything to free his brother Joe Ben from the life-threatening situation, but his efforts are in vain, in the relentlessly rising tide Hank has to watch as his brother Joe Ben drowns before his eyes. While the bad news is finally being brought to the women, Henry Stamper struggles with death in the hospital. His arm was taken off beforehand, and this measure was also in vain.
After Viv, Hank Stamper's wife, who had previously tried everything to get her husband to give up, resignedly has to realize that her husband would rather die than give up, she leaves him. All that remains is Leeland, who decides to stay with his half-brother because he still wants to settle old debts with him. The two brothers bring four gigantic bundles of wood down the river at a time with just one tug in order to fulfill their mission and to let their father win even in death. Triumphantly, Hank on the barge waved his father's severed arm to the amazed crowd that had gathered on the bank, who watched the daring spectacle in disbelief and disbelief.

Reviews
“Work and earnings are considered the highest values of a patriarchal-authoritarian lumberjack family. When she comes into conflict with the union, she plunges into disaster through unsolidarity. Impressive, sometimes gripping family drama that idealizes stiffness and individuality. "
