Down South

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Down South , Southern Rap or Dirty South is a subgenre of hip hop . The name is an analogy to West Coast Rap or East Coast Rap , as Down South, like the music of the two coasts, has its own stylistic features. The term "Dirty South" goes back to a song of the same name by the group Goodie Mob from their debut album Soul Food .

description

Synthesizer- heavy productions, but also soul and funk influences are typical of hip-hop from the south . In general, it differs greatly from the sampling- influenced sound of the east coast, but has parallels to the G-Funk of the west coast, to which it is also closer in terms of content.

The Down South is always characterized by innovations that transcend the boundaries of the hip-hop genre and produce independent musical styles: for example, the rap formation 2 Live Crew created the Miami Bass in the late 1980s ; Crunk was developed in the early 1990s, but only became popular in the early 2000s with the US rapper Lil Jon and in the mid-1990s, DJ Screw introduced the technique of chopping & screwing .

The excessive display of one's own wealth by wearing oversized jewelry - the bling-bling  - also has its origins in the rapeseed scene of the Down South. The former Memphis based soul musician Isaac Hayes is considered the original progenitor of this outfit .
