history

Aerial photo from 1923 from a height of 200 m by Walter Mittelholzer

The name Speicher originated in the Middle Ages, during the heyday of the St. Gallen Monastery . It was first mentioned in a document in the 13th century as "Speycher". At that time there was a granary of the monastery near today's village church in Speicher . The first important battle of the Appenzell Wars that started with it took place between the Appenzell farmers and the city association (including the city of St. Gallen) below the Vögelinsegg at Loch 1403 . The peasants determined to do anything could win this first military challenge; they deceived the enemy with a cunning diversionary maneuver. The battle memorial, a warning Appenzell farmer with a morning star (created in 1903) with a peering view of the nearby town, is enthroned on the crest of the Vögelinsegg.

Speicher station of the Appenzeller Bahnen

In order to relocate the rails of the Trogenerbahn (one of the steepest tracks without a cogwheel), a large piece of rock from the Vögelinsegg was blown away around 1900. The railway connects the Mediterranean villages of Speicher and Trogen with St. Gallen and was completed in 1903 (for the 500th anniversary of the open air theater). In 2004, another 100 years later, the first low-floor shuttle trains came into operation. In 2006 the Trogenerbahn was merged with the Appenzeller Bahnen .

Following the 700th anniversary of the Speicher in 2009, the idea of collecting and securing existing knowledge was born. The core is the digital platform WikiSpeicher , on which the so-called oral history ( narrated story ) in particular records memories, events, facts or ideas in words and pictures.
