Spencer Howells Nelson (born July 11, 1980 in Pocatello , Idaho ) is an American - Azerbaijani basketball player . After studying in his home country, which he interrupted for a two-year missionary work for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints , Nelson started a professional career in the German basketball league for the German champions GHP Bamberg in 2005 . After Bamberg could not defend their title in the basketball league in 2005/06 , Nelson moved to Italy and later to Greece and Spain . Nelson has been back in the Italian Serie A for the local series champion Montepaschi Siena since the 2013/14 season .

Career

Nelson began studying at the Utah State University , where he worked from 1998 for the high school team Aggies time in the Big West Conference of the NCAA played. After his first season, Nelson suspended the second season as "redshirted" due to injury and then interrupted his studies to go on the two-year missionary work that is usual for members of his church. In 2002 he continued his studies and won the Big West championship again with the Aggies. In a team together with the future Bundesliga player Desmond Penigar you missed a surprise in the first round of the NCAA finals against the strongly favored Jayhawks of the University of Kansas . After missing a title defense in the Big West in 2004, they won the Big West championship again in 2005, in which his teammate and freshman Jaycee Carroll was named MVP of the championship tournament. In the NCAA finals they were eliminated again in the first round this time against the Arizona Wildcats .

After completing his studies in 2005, Nelson turned professional, but could ultimately not fight for a place in the final squad at the NBA club Utah Jazz . So he started his professional career with the German champions GHP from Bamberg , where Rick Stafford was another player of the Mormon faith. In the ULEB Euroleague 2005/06 , the club reached the top 16 teams at the premiere at the highest European club level, but then remained without a win. In the basketball Bundesliga 2005/06 they finished second in the main round behind ALBA Berlin , as in the previous year , but in the play-off semi- final series they were eliminated in five games against eventual champions RheinEnergie Köln . Nelson moved to Italy for the following season, where he played for the champions Benetton from Treviso , whom he had impressed with a formidable performance of 23 points and 20 rebounds in the previous season when they were defeated in Bamberg . In the ULEB Euroleague 2006/07 Treviso was only able to leave Aris Thessaloniki behind in the second group stage of the 16 best teams and was eliminated. While after winning the Supercup they also won the Italian cup competition, in the final game of which Nelson was named MVP of the game, the club was deducted twelve points for licensing violations in the championship of Lega Basket Serie A , which meant that the play-offs were missed and his Couldn't defend the title. For the following season Nelson moved to the league competitor Fortitudo Upim from Bologna , who had forfeited their right to participate in the ULEB Euroleague and for the first time no longer competed in the highest European club competition. In contrast to Benetton Treviso and local rivals Virtus Bologna it was enough for the team in the 2007/08 season, in which Nelson had only nine championship appearances after injuries, in eighth place at least to move into the final round of the national championship. There they were eliminated in the first play-off round against the defending champion and main round first Montepaschi Siena smoothly in three games, which thus confirmed the "change of power" in the Italian league.

For the 2008/09 season Nelson moved to the Greek league A1 Ethniki to Aris from Thessaloniki . Aris was also no longer qualified for the Euroleague after two appearances in a row and drew the "shorter" in the first group stage of the Eurocup 2008/09 in a direct comparison with the national competitor Panellinios Athens and was eliminated. In the national championship they reached the play-offs as third and were eliminated in the semi-final series against defending champion and series champion Panathinaikos Athens . The "small final series" for third place against GS Marousi was lost in five games, so that for the time being they were not eligible to qualify for the ULEB Euroleague 2009/10 . While Aris was finally invited to the qualifying round by the ULEB , Nelson moved to the newly promoted GS Peristeri in the metropolitan region of the Greek capital Athens . Peristeri missed on his return to the top Greek league in the 2009/10 season in ninth place to make it into the final round of the championship. Nelson acquired Azerbaijani citizenship in 2010, which meant that he was subject to less restrictive alien restrictions in various southern European leagues, including Spain in particular. After he achieved promotion to Division A of the best European national teams with the Azerbaijani national team , he then moved to the Spanish ACB league for the 2010/11 season , where his former teammate from college seasons Jaycee Carroll was active as the top scorer of the preseason. Carroll was able to defend his title as top scorer in the ACB league and Gran Canaria improved to fifth place in the main round, with one eliminated in the play-offs of the Spanish championship again in the first round. After Carroll had been poached by league rivals Real Madrid and later also took Azerbaijani citizenship like his Mormon brother Nelson, the team weakened somewhat in the 2011/12 season and clearly missed a play-off placement, although Nelson was the most effective player on the last main round match day was named "Player of the Week" in the ACB League. With a new main sponsor, Gran Canaria managed to return to the play-off finals of the ACB League in the 2012/13 season, in which Nelson was named Player of the Week twice in a row. Here they surprisingly beat Laboral Kutxa's second-placed team in the first round , including the German national player Tibor Pleiß , and reached the semi-final series for the first time in the history of the club. They then lost it in three games against defending champions FC Barcelona . With Gran Canaria Nelson did not get beyond the round of the best 16 teams in two appearances in three seasons in the ULEB Eurocup .

For the 2013/14 season Nelson returned to Italy, where he was committed by series champion Montepaschi Siena. With his return to Italy, the bad luck with injuries returned to Nelson and he injured himself right after the start of the season, so that he was out for a large part of the preliminary round of the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 . After financial problems, however, the club had to rebuild the entire championship team and for the first time in eight years missed participation in the round of the 16 best teams in the ULEB Euroleague . After the elimination from the highest European club competition, Daniel Hackett and Taylor Rochestie left the club, so that Montepaschi had to completely rebuild at least the team's " backcourt ". Even with a healthy Spencer Nelson, the team hardly has any chance of winning their eighth national championship in a row.
