The St.-Pius-Gymnasium Coesfeld is a private school in Catholic sponsorship of the diocese of Münster in Coesfeld . The school, whose namesake is Pope Pius X , was run as an all- boys boarding school until 1976 . Today the school is a high school for around 750 boys and girls. The catchment area of the grammar school includes the entire Coesfeld district and parts of the Borken district . It is surrounded by the so-called "Piuswald" on the outskirts of Coesfeld.

School life

Since 2004, ninth and tenth grade students have been involved in the “Social Commitment” project for at least 20 hours at non-profit institutions.

The Pius-Gymnasium has also been smoke-free since 2004, as one of the first schools in North Rhine-Westphalia . This was decided by a large majority of teachers, parents and students.

To express the solidarity with its patron, a bust of Pope Pius X has been standing in the courtyard of the school since September 2005 .

Days of religious orientation (TrO) take place in grades 6, 8 and 10 . A school counselor works at the school. In addition, the school has a modern, technically well-equipped auditorium.

The St.-Pius-Gymnasium has had a partnership with the Lycée Notre-Dame in Guingamp in Brittany for several decades . A group of 20 to 30 tenth grade students visits the Breton city for about two weeks and receives their exchange partners for an equally long return visit. In addition to attending school, the exchange also includes a cultural program.

In the seventh grade there is a trip to Herne Bay and Whitstable , in the 11th grade there is an exchange with Krakow ( Poland ).

Once a year in Advent, the school publishes the “Pius Letter” with the events of the past year in the school. Project weeks have been held regularly since 1984.

Numerous working groups, including dance, theater, computer science / robot control, badminton, archery, football, law and handicrafts, and from December 2006 learning circles are offered.

A religious project week took place in August 2007. The most famous guest was the former student and then, now controversial, Auxiliary Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst .

In 2014 the school entered into a sponsorship with the aid organization Misereor , which is based on many years of cooperation, including collecting donations for the aid organization.

In the school year 2016/17 the so-called "ecological year" began on the Pius. Schoolchildren were able to take part in an internal school competition thanks to their environmentally conscious behavior. In the course of the ecological year, a photovoltaic system was installed, which provides electricity for the school.

Rome trip 2014

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the St. Pius High School, the entire school community traveled to Rome for eight days in the week before the 2014 autumn break. This was a major logistical challenge for the organization team, so the planning phase for the trip began two years earlier. The return trip in the 15 buses took around 25 hours each. In Rome, the pupils - partly led by their teachers and Rome experts in classes, partly independently in school groups - visited many of the city's numerous sights. One of the highlights of the trip to Rome was a visit to St. Peter's Basilica . Here the school community attended a morning mass by the Pope on St. Peter's Square , viewed the dome and celebrated its own mass in the apse of St. Peter's Basilica with the Auxiliary Bishop Dieter Geerlings from Münster, who traveled with them .

Historical development

Boarding school and Pius College

In 1953, at the suggestion of the Bishop of Münster , Michael Keller , a Konvikt for young priests was built on the outskirts of Coesfeld on the site of today's Kolping educational institution . With a boys' boarding school , boys from financially weak families and from rural areas were given the opportunity to obtain their Abitur . The idea for this project came about on the initiative of the headmaster of the state high school Nepomucenum , Lammers. The parish St.Lamberti put a property on the mountain Coesfelder available. Boklage Diocesan Development Council drafted a plan for a school with 80–115 students. In March 1954, the ground-breaking ceremony took place for a building shell that was completed in 44 days. The topping-out ceremony took place in August 1954 and in 1955 88 students could move into the house. The school was only allowed to accept boys who "based on their personal and religious attitudes offer hope that they will one day serve God and people as priests." Only elementary school students who were eligible for entry into grade 7 or 9 were prepared for attendance at the Nepomucenum grammar school in remedial courses held in the boarding school building. The fee for the boys from the Münster diocese was DM 40–120 .

high school

It was soon recognized that it was insufficient to simply offer remedial courses for attending the Nepomucenum high school. It turned out to be necessary to convert the institution, originally planned as a pure boarding school, into an independent advanced high school that enabled students to obtain university entrance qualifications in six or seven years , regardless of the curriculum of the state high school .

On April 1, 1964, Josef Siepelmeyer took over the management of the advanced high school founded in 1963. This state substitute school could also be attended by external students who did not live in the boarding school.

Auditorium and large playground

At the beginning of the school year 1964/1965, lessons with five teachers and 88 students could begin in the rooms of the boarding school for grades 8 and 9. The advanced high school initially consisted of three classes with a total of 89 students. With a residential building with 40 single rooms, the boarding school could accommodate up to 160 students.

First the students learned Latin, then English. English soon became the first language, as the students came from the sending schools with a knowledge of English. Two thirds of the students should initially be boarding school students. In 1965, due to the increasing number of pupils, a pavilion with five classrooms was built on Gerlever Weg on the site of today's sports field.

In the school year 1968/1969, 207 students were taught by 14 teachers. With the beginning of the school year 1969/1970 girls could be admitted for the first time. This made the Pius the first and, for a further decade, the only Gymnasium in Coesfeld that offered co-educational instruction. After four years of existence at the advanced high school, the first Abitur with eleven students took place in provisional rooms in 1968.

From 1967 to May 1969 a new, two-story school building was created, today's H-wing, the old sports hall with art rooms and workrooms. The school building was planned for up to 300 students. The Pius-Colleg continued to serve as a boarding school for students who mostly attended the St.-Pius-Gymnasium.

On August 1, 1975, grade 5 students were accepted for the first time. In 1976 six more classrooms, the east wing, were built, and the first music room was created. In 1977 the grammar school was given three courses for the first time. In 1978 a second sports hall was built. At the end of the 1978/1979 school year the last students left the Pius College and the boarding school building was handed over to the Kolping Society . The school only uses the chapel and the auditorium together with the Kolping Society. From then on, the St. Pius Gymnasium was run in three classes. In August the "Association for the Promotion of St. Pius-Gymnasium eV" was founded.

The auditorium

In 1980 an additional building project, the construction of the west wing and the middle wing with the new earth science room, the chemistry room and a language laboratory that no longer exists, was completed. The caretaker's lodge was relocated from a room opposite the staff room to the central wing opposite the old earth science room, which was previously used as a regular classroom. The teachers' room was relocated from today's teachers' library to an extension at the main entrance and the students' library from today's upper level room to the break hall of the east wing. Since then, the school has largely remained the same in appearance.

In 1983/1984 a "Pillar of Science and Art" was built at the school entrance.

In 1984 the first undergraduate high school students graduated from high school. In 1986 the headmaster Siepelmeyer retired and was succeeded by Detlef Nolte.

In May 1995 a new auditorium with a music room and a meditation room was inaugurated. The extension was designed by the famous German architect Josef Paul Kleihues .

In 2002, an association of former students was founded, which joined the association. In 2005, the sponsoring association decided to call out a tender to develop a new school logo among current and former students. On December 23, 2005, the winner of this tender was announced as well as the new school logo, which has since been featured on the school's official documents, the website and the Pius letter of the school.

Since the 2005/2006 school year, the St.-Pius-Gymnasium has been able to take the Abitur in eight years .

Since the first Abitur exams at St.-Pius-Gymnasium in 1968, 2030 pupils have achieved the Abitur within forty years.

In August 2010, Norbert Just took over the office of the new headmaster with the new school year 2010/11.

In June 2013, an association of former students from St. Pius High School was founded under the name “PiusCOnnEct”. Celebrations to mark the school's 50th anniversary are planned for the beginning of September 2014.
