St. Barbara is the Catholic church in the Langenfeld district of Reusrath . It is one of the churches of the Catholic parish of St. Josef and Martin .

On the history of the community

The beginnings of the parish lie in the darkness of the late Early Middle Ages or at the beginning of the High Middle Ages. This is confirmed by the findings on the deserted church of St. Barbara on the 'Alter Markt', which were obtained there by means of an excavation in 2008 by the Office for Land Monument Preservation in the Rhineland . Historical sources also show a close connection between the parish of St. Barbara and St. Aldegundis in Leverkusen - Rheindorf , the branch church of which it is to be considered. There is never any talk of a pastor or pastor in Reusrath, but always only of an "officianten", that is, a holder of a church office. As a result, Reusrath was not considered a parish church for a long time , but was only run as a "capella", a chapel. This becomes clear in formulations, such as that in a document dated May 7, 1436. Here there is talk of a "Reutzroder hunschaff in patrochia Ryndorpe" (ie: a Reusrath honor in the parish of Rheindorf). Even more informative in this regard is a record of a witness interrogation before the official of the Cologne church authorities on September 12, 1442. There is from the "capella in Roisraide infra limites ecclesiae patrochialis in Ryndorp" (ie "the chapel in Reusrath within the boundaries of the parish church of Rheindorf") ) the speech. There can therefore be no doubt that the community is dependent on St. Aldegundis in Rheindorf. In this respect, it should come as no surprise that Reusrath and St. Aldegundis belonged to the Deutz deanery for a long time, while the rest of today's Langefeld, along with St. Martin in Richrath, belonged to the Neuss deanery.

Consequently the first clergy in Reusrath were also pastors from Rheindorf. The first mentioned in writing was a Gottfried von Mulfort, who held the post of pastor in Rheindorf until around 1270. This was followed by a canon from Steinfeld Monastery named Christian. In addition to the distance to Rheindorf, the pastoral care of the community turned out to be difficult for economic reasons. As it became known from the year 1578, the filling of a vicar position could not be carried out by the community without outside help. At that time, the majority of the wages and supplies for the vicar had to be borne by the owners of the Dückeburg , the Lords of Etzbach, who came up with a "heusgen, hoef, garden, lant and 1 morgen heuwais" (house, yard, garden, land and one morning hay meadow ) had to participate. It was not until 1667 that the St. Barbara Church was designated as the parish church and the incumbent priest as the pastor.

In addition, as still the patronage of Barbara a close connection to Rheindorf out stands but with St. Margaretha in Dusseldorf-Gerresheim and St. Mary's Assumption in Solingen- Gräfrath right bank just in Rheindorf and Reusrath between Cologne and Duisburg the only church with a Women's patronage. Furthermore, Reusrath and Rheindorf as communities are also linked to one another in various local histories. Regarding the age determination of Reusrath as a branch church of Rheindorf, the age of the St. Aldegundis church can therefore be deduced. Excavations at St. Aldegundis showed a time span between 685 and 940 for bone finds that were dated using the radio carbon method . With the branch church in Reusrath there is also an indication of a west-east settlement movement from places ending with -dorf to new settlement areas with the ending -rath obtained through clearing .

Shaping change - developing faith

The former parish of the same name merged on January 1, 2011 within the archbishop's experimental project " Shaping Change - Developing Faith " with the seven other Langenfeld parishes to form the parish of St. Josef and Martin .

On the building history of the churches

The first church in Reusrath was the already mentioned Romanesque chapel , a building of 12.60 times 6.80 m floor area . This chapel was mentioned as early as the 11th century and had a square choir as well as a three-story tower with a basic dimension of 4.60 by 4.60 m square . A side aisle 2.80 m wide on the north side of the church and an extension on the south side ( sacristy or baptistery ?) Were added to this chapel , before a much larger baroque church was built on its place in 1791 , which continued until 1913 was used.

To today's architectural monument

At the end of the 19th century, the pastor at St. Barbara, Engelbert Valder, had to deal with new building plans on the one hand because of the increased population and on the other hand because of the age of the baroque church. Together with the church council, efforts to rebuild the building began in 1892. The foundation stone was laid in 1895 and on March 20, 1898, Cologne Auxiliary Bishop Hermann Josef Schmitz signed the deed of consecration for the new St. Barbara Church. It was built according to the plans of the Düsseldorf architect Theodor Roß without any reference to the old church in the neo-Gothic style . Its tower measures 47.30 m with the cock and cross. The same architect designed the rectory south of the church in 1911. Despite the architectural departure from the old, part of the interior was taken over from the old church, such as the baptismal font , the lecture cross , the pulpit with sound cover , the wooden statues Hubertus and Barbara as well as part of the old altar . In 1925, the organ built by Seifert & Söhne , Cologne, was consecrated on the lower organ loft, the high altar carved by Franz Xaver Haak from Erkelenz and gilded by the painter Klappheck from Aachen, and the two oil paintings created by the painter Ritterbach from Düsseldorf . The last investment before World War II was the installation of an electric bell. On July 8, 1941, the church and the rectory were slightly damaged by an air raid on the roof and windows. Not much changed in the Church until 1966. Pastor Joseph Ravens (pastor in Reusrath 1964–1973) redesigned the interior of the church in accordance with the Second Vatican Council, the high altar was replaced by a simple altar, the side altars, the communion bench, the pulpit and the confessionals were removed , new benches were removed and the paintings in the chancel were whitewashed. Another renovation with a museum character of the interior took place in the years 1977 to 1986 by the late appointed pastor Joseph Limbach. The 100th anniversary of the consecration was celebrated in 1998.

Furnishing

Altar area of the church
Barbara statue on the right choir pillar
Baptistery of the church with the former high altar ( triptych )

In the tower hall (entrance area, under the tower) on the right-hand side, in the expositorium of the high altar of the former church, there is a figure of Anthony .

Opposite, also in the tower hall, stands a figure of St. Jude Thaddäus .

There also hangs an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help . This is flanked by two angel sculptures. Next to it are two places for sacrificial lights built into the walls .

There is a Pietà under the organ gallery . Mary sits in front of a tapestry, bowing her head over the dead Jesus, who is on her knees. This figure is placed on a pedestal that shows the Lamb of God .

There are two female saints on the pillars of the choir. On the left choir pillar a statue of the Virgin Mary , which, according to old photos, could also be found in the church earlier. The Child Jesus is from the winning Madonna with both hands, carrying the left in the orb and raises his right hand to gesture of blessing . Maria wears a red petticoat and a blue cloak, both robes are richly decorated.

On the right choir pillar there is a baroque statue of Barbara . She carries the tower as an attribute in her left hand. The index finger of the right hand points to a window in the tower in which the chalice and the host are shown. She also wears an ornate crown.

The statue of Hubertus , which now stands on a pedestal on the outer wall of the left aisle , was found in the tower chamber in 1974. After a restoration in the workshop of the Cologne Diocesan Museum, the figure could be put back in the church. The saint is depicted as a bishop with a dark undergarment and a white Rochett . He wears a bishop's staff and miter and in his left hand an open book. He is followed by a deer with a cross in its antlers.

Opposite is a baroque figure of St. Sebastian , which was created between 1660 and 1750 and still comes from the old Reusrath church. The young Sebastian is dressed only in a loincloth and pierced by arrows. He is tied to a dry tree stump. A diagonal runs from top right to bottom left through the top of the branch and the right arm.

A little further ahead, closer to the entrance and exit, there is a statue of St. Christopher on the same level and on an identical pedestal . You can see the saint supporting himself on a branch with his left hand, as he carries the baby Jesus on his right shoulder. His head is turned towards Jesus.

Opposite is another statue of Barbara. The parish priest holds a pen in her right hand and a tower on her left.

The baptistery is located in the front part of the left aisle. The outer walls in this area are paneled with the four relief representations (Adoration of the Magi, Resurrection, Ascension and Pentecost) and two paintings (Annunciation and Birth) of the former high altar and simple wooden parts. Above this paneling there are angel figures on two small pedestals , which used to be above the high altar.

In 2003 and 2004 new pews were installed. The side parts were made according to templates from Ensisheim in Alsace. In recent years, heat-insulating wooden floors have been laid under the pews.

During the Easter period there is a wooden sculpture of the risen Jesus ( "Der Auferstandene" , around 1880) in the expositorium of the current high altar . A present to Pastor Joseph Limbach from Pastor Josef Benz from Niederkassel . Outside of Easter, the figure is in the sacristy .

There is also a Sacred Heart figure in the sacristy .

A twelve-lamp chandelier hangs above the altar, a present on the occasion of Pastor Joseph Limbach's 40th anniversary as a priest in 2008.

There is a nine-flame candlestick by the right confessional. Originally there were two of these hand-forged candlesticks in the church.

The cross of the old high altar is now in front of the entrance to the sacristy.

Numerous vestments and missals can be found in another sacristy . There is also a former tabernacle and two - Jewish - Menorot .
