The parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Herne - Börnig - Sodingen is a Roman Catholic parish church of the St. Dionysius parish of the Emschertal dean's office in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

Building history

The tower
inner space

Ecclesiastically, all Catholic residents of the peasant communities Börnig, Sodingen and Gysenberg as well as Horsthausen originally belonged to the parish of St. Lambertus in Castrop . Around 1818 the population is given as 584 people, 546 of them Catholic parishioners. Around 1885 there were 2,000 parishioners and since April 28, 1892, the parish has celebrated its services in the St. Urbanus emergency church built on the corner of Kirchstrasse and Widumerstrasse (Widum = rectory) . This emergency church served the mother parish as a domicile during the renovation of its St. Lambertus church and the old church bell from Castrop from 1643 was transferred to St. Urbanus (1906 to Merklinde , lost in 1943). After Horsthausen had also become independent with St. Joseph , the parish of Börnig-Sodingen with Gysenberg was established on April 9, 1900 . The new parish council of Börnig-Sodingen succeeded in buying a piece of land opposite the emergency church, called the Hollerte Stock , and first of all to set up its own cemetery. With the establishment of the political office of Sodingen, the desire to build a parish church of their own increased, and planning was pushed forward.

According to the plans of the Bochum architect Hermann Wielers , the neo-Gothic building was built by the Sodingen contractor Rehkopp. The building price was 200,500 marks . The foundation stone was laid on April 18, 1902, the consecration on December 8, 1903 and the consecration of the church under the patronage of St. Peter and St. Paul by the Paderborn auxiliary bishop Augustinus Gockel on July 5, 1906 .

On Pentecost Sunday 1943 and especially on November 9, 1943, the church building was badly damaged and the church was closed for 13 months. In 1951/1952 the structural security of the church was restored with simple painting and glazing.

On November 15, 1991, the district council of Sodingen decided to apply for the parish church of St. Peter and Paul to be entered in the list of monuments of the city of Herne. On February 13, 1992, the city gave the following notification: “According to § 3 of the law for the protection and maintenance of architectural monuments in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia of March 11, 1980 ..., the Catholic. Parish church St. Peter and Paul, in 4690 Herne 1, district Börnig , corridor 12, parcel 5, has been entered as an architectural monument in the list of architectural monuments of the city of Herne with effect from today. "

The first organ was built in 1810 by the Meyer organ building workshop in Herford. In 1903 it was moved to Börniger Notkirche, and after 1904 to the new St. Peter and Paul Church. It was expanded to 17 registers . In 1960 it was moved to the St. Josephs Church in Horsthauser . In 1983 it was restored for the new St. Joseph building at the Sauer company in Höxter and received 21 registers. It has been in use again since 1987. It is the oldest surviving and at the same time most valuable organ in Herne.

In July 1960, a new organ from the Stockmann Brothers workshop in Werl with 52 registers was purchased, which was moved from the gallery to the north aisle in 1982 and placed there in a new case. The instrument has the following disposition :

graveyard

In addition to the church, the community has its own cemetery. It was created so that the Catholics of the Sodinger, Börniger and Holthaus communities no longer had to bury their dead in Castrop. The graves of the deceased clergy are worth seeing.

St. Josefs Hospital (Marienhospital - Clinic II)

Since April 20, 1913, a hospital has belonged to the municipality. A south wing was built in 1924/1925, and in 1926 a large extension was built along Widumer Strasse by the Gelsenkirchen architect Josef Franke . Numerous extensions and conversions followed. In the autumn of 1978, the Herne University Clinic concluded an agreement with the parish of St. Peter and Paul, which provided for the takeover of the St. Josefs Hospital, which had run into financial difficulties, on April 1, 1979. With the now Clinic II , the Marienhospital also took over the nursing school founded in 1966.

Thomas More House

The House of Youth , built in 1963/1964, was completely renovated and expanded in 2009. It has served as a community center since the Urbanushaus was commercially leased.

Urbanus house

In 1927 the club house was built at the eastern end of the cemetery. The Kolping family Herne-Sodingen and the parish library in particular have their headquarters here. Its rooms have been leased for several decades and are home to a restaurant.
