Historical development

National debt and budget deficit

The French national debt has increased steadily over the past 40 years. Since 2007 the Maastricht criterion , which provides for a maximum budget deficit of 3%, has not been met. At the beginning of 2015, the European Commission announced that it would also tolerate budget deficits above the ceiling of 3% set out in the Maastricht Treaty in 2015 and 2016 .
