The Foundation Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss ( SHF for short ; formerly Stiftung Berliner Schloss - Humboldtforum ) is a non-profit, legal foundation under civil law based in Berlin.
The foundation is the client and operator of the Humboldt Forum in the Berlin Palace and prepares the cultural and technical operations across the board. The ruins of the Berlin Palace, which was damaged in World War II , were demolished in 1950, one year after the founding of the GDR .
Foundation and history
After it was established on July 2, 2009, the Berliner Schloss - Humboldtforum Foundation began its work on November 1, 2009 with the appointment of the Executive Board.
The Humboldt Forum is an important federal cultural building project in Berlin. The foundation assumes the client function for the construction of the Humboldt Forum in the facades of the Berlin Palace to be rebuilt. She becomes the owner of the property and the building.
The foundation is under the patronage of the Federal President , works closely with the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and is funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development on the basis of a resolution by the German Bundestag .
In January 2016, the foundation was renamed the Humboldt Forum Foundation in the Berlin Palace .
Foundation purpose
In accordance with its statutes, the foundation exclusively and directly pursues non-profit purposes of promoting art and culture, education, international sentiment and tolerance in all areas of culture, the idea of international understanding, as well as monument protection and monument preservation. With this in mind, the foundation organizes its own events, exhibitions, readings and much more. The SHF will provide the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation with the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art , the State of Berlin and the Humboldt University in the Humboldt Forum with suitable rooms for free use.
SHF is the client and owner of the Humboldt Forum in the Berlin Palace. The Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) is responsible for the construction management for the construction project. The most important tasks of the foundation are also:
- The coordination and bundling of the interests of the partners in the Humboldt Forum.
- The organization of a permanent exhibition on the subject of Historic Center Berlin - Identity and Reconstruction.
Construction project
On July 4, 2002, the German Bundestag accepted the - narrowly approved - recommendation of the International Expert Commission on Historic Center Berlin . The resolution adopted for this purpose provides for the urban redesign of the Spree island to be largely based on the historical city plan and for the building of the palace area to be based on the cubature of the former Berlin palace . The German Bundestag also followed the recommendation of the commission to rebuild the baroque facades on the north, west and south sides as well as in the Schlüterhof.
Reconstruction of the Berlin Palace
On December 21, 2007, the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR) announced a competition for the reconstruction of the Berlin City Palace and the construction of the Humboldt Forum Berlin. Franco Stella received first prize for his design. The shell construction work started in June 2013. After the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace, the building complex will house the future Humboldt Forum, which is scheduled to open in 2019.
donate
The additional costs of the reconstruction of the baroque facades compared to a contemporary facade design amount to 80 million euros. These 80 million euros are raised through a private fundraising campaign. In particular, the non-profit association of the Berlin Palace has been collecting funds for the reconstruction of the baroque facades since 2004 with a broad-based collection of donations.
Acquiring donations for the reconstruction of the historical facades and the construction of the Humboldt Forum are also among the tasks of the foundation. As a cooperation partner of all private institutions that collect donations for the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace, all donations go to the foundation, which, as the client, finances the reconstruction of the baroque facades.
Humboldt Forum
The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation will show the non-European collections of its National Museums in Berlin on the second and third floors. The knowledge archives of these museums, some of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, move into the first floor, the workshops of knowledge .
In April 2015, Minister of State for Culture Monika Grütters appointed the Briton Neil MacGregor as head of the founding directorship, which is to develop key topics for the Humboldt Forum for an initial two years. In addition, Hermann Parzinger and Horst Bredekamp belonged to the directorship.
On June 1, 2018, Hartmut Dorgerloh was appointed General Director by the Board of Trustees of the Humboldt Forum. At this point in time, the founding directorship of Neil MacGregor, Hermann Parzinger and Horst Bredekamp also ended. Dorgerloh's contract initially runs until 2023.
