Premio Strega
The Premio Strega ( Strega Prize ) is an Italian literary prize awarded annually for a book published in Italy. The publication period must be between May 1st of the previous year and April 30th of the year. The Premio Strega Europeo has also been awarded since 2014 for a work from another European country that has been translated into Italian.

The jury consists of 400 people from cultural life (mainly literary critics) and is called Amici della Domenica (English: The Friends of Sunday ). The books available for election are proposed by two of the Amici . Voting will take place in two rounds, the first in June in the Bellonci house, the second in early July in the nymphaeum of Villa Giulia in Rome .
irregularities
When his new book 'Orizzonte Mobile' (2009) was published, the Roman Daniele Del Giudice was prematurely celebrated by the media as the predetermined winner of the Strega Prize. The rumors, which Del Giudice himself denied in the meantime, lacked any basis: 'Orizzonte Mobile' was never nominated, and the 2009 Strega Prize went to the Venetian Tiziano Scarpa with Stabat Mater.
history
The idea for this prize arose in Maria and Goffredo Bellonci's literary salon. This was founded in 1944, shortly before the end of the Second World War, and became a meeting of the most famous Italian artists and writers of the time. The participants in these meetings came to be known as Amici della Domenica . In 1947 it was decided together with Guido Alberti , a liqueur manufacturer and owner of the Strega company , to award a literary prize. The first prize winner was Ennio Flaiano for his novel Tempo di uccidere .
In the first few years the prize was awarded by visitors to the salon, and the name of the jury members, which is still in use today, comes from this time. After the initiators died, the jury was expanded to a total of 400 people.

“Cominciarono, nell'inverno e nella primavera 1944, a radunarsi amici, giornalisti, scrittori, artisti, letterati, gente di ogni partito unita nella partecipazione di un tempo doloroso nel presente e incerto nel futuro. Poi, dopo il 4 giugno, finito l'incubo, gli amici continuarono a venire: è proprio un tentativo di ritrovarsi uniti per far fronte alla disperazione. Prendiamo tutti coraggio da questo sentirci insieme. Spero che sarà per ognuno un vivido ricordo "
“In the winter and spring of 1944, friends began to get together, journalists, writers, artists, writers, people from all areas, united in the painful present we shared and with an uncertain future. Later, after June 4th, the end of the nightmare, the friends continued to meet: It is an attempt to fight hopelessness together. We all take courage from this sense of community. I hope it will be a living memory for everyone. "
