Stupava (German Stampfen , Hungarian Stomfa ) is a city in southwest Slovakia . It is located on the western foothills of the Little Carpathians north of the city of Bratislava .
It was first mentioned in 1269 as Ztumpa and is now divided into the official parts of Mást (German Maasst , Hungarian Mászt ; incorporated in 1953 - further subdivided into Mást I , Mást II and Mást III ) and Stupava (subdivided into Stupava , Bystrická hora and Hrubé lúky ).
However, the area was already settled in the Neolithic Age. The Germanic peoples followed the Celts. At the time of the Romans there was also an advanced guard post in the local area. Many of the archaeological finds in the Germanic settlements of the regions show a lively exchange with the Roman Empire.
From the late Middle Ages until well into the Turkish era, the region was mostly populated by Germans. Due to the chaos of war, many Slovaks and Croats immigrated. In 1880 (census) the city still had 27.1% German residents, in 1930 (census) it had 2.6%. In 1945/46 this remaining German population was also expelled to Austria and Germany by the ČSR government Beneš .

In Stupava there is a substation with a supply of 380 kV for the two nuclear power plants Mochovce and Bohunice .
