Microsoft Surface is a tablet PC family from the US company Microsoft , which was first introduced by Steve Ballmer on June 18, 2012 .

First generation

Both devices have a multi-touch capable 10.6-inch display with an aspect ratio of 16: 9. The housing with a fold-out stand is made of a magnesium alloy called "VaporMg" and contains two microphones and speakers as well as a camera on the front and back. The screen is glazed with Corning Gorilla Glass 2.0. Both versions also have the two-antenna configuration for W-LAN in accordance with the 802.11 a / b / g / n standards .

Surface RT

The cheaper version of the Surface called Surface RT is based on an Nvidia Tegra 3 - ARM - SoC (1.3 GHz clock frequency) with Nvidia Geforce ULP and 2 GB of RAM . It runs on Windows RT and is supplied with Microsoft Office 2013 Home & Student RT (Word 2013 RT, Excel 2013 RT, PowerPoint 2013 RT, OneNote 2013 RT and, from Windows RT 8.1, Outlook ). The Office programs in the RT version do not support macros , add-ons and features that require ActiveX . E-mail applications such as Mozilla Thunderbird or Opera Mail cannot be retrofitted. A mail app from the Windows Store (login via Microsoft account ) is required for this or is already pre-installed. The tablet weighs 680 g and is 9.3 mm thick. The 10.6-inch clear type screen has a resolution of 1366 × 768 pixels ( WXGA ). The Surface RT is available in two memory versions with 32 and 64  GB . The connection options are a USB 2.0 port, an HD video out port (µHDMI, separate adapter for HDMI and VGA connection required) and a slot for microSD XC cards.

Surface Pro

The Surface Pro is based on an Intel - Core i5-3317U - ULV processor third generation ( " Ivy Bridge ") with 1.7 GHz clock speed, Intel HD Graphics 4000 and 4GB of RAM dual channel -Arbeitsspeicher of Micron Technology . The Surface Pro runs on the Windows 8 Pro operating system . This version weighs 903 g and is 13.5 mm thick. The 10.6-inch clear type screen has a full HD resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels. The cooling is realized by two small fans as well as slots around the whole case so that it cannot be blocked with the hands when holding the tablet. There were two memory variants available with 64 and 128 GB. The Surface Pro provides a USB 3.0 port, a Mini DisplayPort and a slot for microSD XC cards.

In addition to multi-touch finger inputs, the Surface Pro can also be operated with the supplied stylus, which can be magnetically attached to the case when not in use. When using a pen, the tablet automatically ignores finger inputs that involuntarily e.g. B. can be done by laying on the hand to write to avoid incorrect entries. Microsoft calls this "Palm Block" (from palm for "palm").

For the Chinese market, Microsoft offered its own edition of the Surface Pro, which does not come with Windows 8 Pro, but with Windows 8. In return, Office 2013 Home & Student (instead of a one-year trial version of Office 365 ) was preinstalled free of charge.

In October 2013, parallel to the market launch of the second generation, sales of the Surface Pro were stopped. Microsoft was silent about the reasons for this.

Second generation

The second generation of Surface tablets was presented by Microsoft on September 23, 2013. Both devices appeared on October 22, 2013.

Surface 2

The successor to the Surface RT is called Surface 2 and comes with the Windows RT 8.1 operating system . The Surface 2 is thinner (9 mm) and lighter (676 g) than its predecessor (9.3 mm, 680 g) and is now only available in silver; the stand on the back can now be set up at two angles. A Tegra 4 from Nvidia with a clock frequency of 1.7 GHz and 2 GB of RAM is used as the processor . In addition to a USB 3.0 port and Bluetooth 4.0, the tablet has a 1080p screen. Another innovation are the improved cameras: a 3.5 megapixel camera on the front and one with 5 megapixels on the back as well as a 1/3-inch sensor, which should enable greatly improved image quality even in low light.

Surface Pro 2

The Surface Pro 2 runs on Windows 8.1 Pro and has an Intel Core i5-4200U processor ( Haswell architecture ) with an HD 4400 graphics chip and a clock frequency of 1.6 GHz. The full HD display has been improved compared to the previous model to reduce reflections and enable more accurate color reproduction. Microsoft has also revised the loudspeakers and the battery life is said to have been improved by 75% compared to its predecessor and can be extended by a further 25% using a keyboard with an integrated battery (“Power Cover”). With a weight of 920 grams, the Surface 2 is significantly heavier than similarly sized tablet computers. Since the beginning of 2014, some Surface Pro 2 models have been shipped with a 300 MHz higher clocked Intel processor (Core i5-4300U with 1.9 GHz).

Third generation

Surface 3

The Surface 3 has been available in Germany since May 7, 2015, and is available in four different versions:

The screen diagonal is 10.8 inches, the resolution 1920 × 1280 pixels. With a weight of 622 g it is 178 g lighter than the Surface Pro 3. An Intel Atom Quad Core x7-Z8700 serves as the processor . The connections include a full-size USB 3 port, a mini display port, a microSD card reader, a micro USB charging socket, a headset socket and a connection for the cover. The Surface 3 is delivered with Windows 8.1 as standard, an annual subscription to Office 365 Personal is included in the purchase price.

Surface Pro 3

The Surface Pro 3 was presented on May 20, 2014 and has been available in Germany since August 28, 2014. The Surface Pro 3 offers a screen diagonal of 12 "in 3: 2 format with a resolution of 2160 × 1440 pixels. The stand has been completely redesigned and can now be folded continuously up to 150 °. Instead of the Wacom pen technology previously used , Microsoft is using the Surface Pro 3 to digitizer technology from N-trig .

Despite the larger display, the Surface Pro 3 is 9.1 mm thinner and 800 g lighter than its predecessor, which could be achieved, for example, with a much flatter and more efficient fan. The Surface Pro 3 continues to use a magnesium alloy housing ("VaporMg"), which, like the Surface 2, is now silver. Surface Pro 4

The Surface Pro 4 was introduced on October 6, 2015. News are facial recognition (Windows Hello) and new Intel Skylake CPUs of the sixth generation. The more expensive version also has 16 gigabytes of RAM . A new version of the optional Type Cover also offers a fingerprint scanner . Further innovations are a hybrid cooling system and an increased working speed, the physical Windows button on the display frame is no longer necessary compared to the predecessor. In addition, the display has increased from 12 inches to 12.3 inches despite the housing size.

Surface Pro 5 (2017)

The Surface Pro was introduced on May 23, 2017 and has been available since June 15, 2017. Little has changed in terms of visual appearance. The main changes concern the hardware. New Intel Kabylake CPUs of the seventh generation are used as the CPU . The battery life has been extended to 13.5 hours. There is no fan for the i5 version. The Surface Pro (2017) is also available with LTE.

Surface Pro 6

At a hardware event in New York on October 2, 2018, Microsoft presented the Surface Pro 6 for the first time. In addition to slight changes to the case, the new color variant is black. The processors have also been updated, depending on the variant, the Intel Core i5 8250U or the Intel Core i7 8550U is now used.

Surface Pro 7

The seventh generation of the Surface Pro was introduced on October 2, 2019 and will be available from October 22, 2019. Little has changed in terms of the visual appearance. New Intel CPUs of the tenth generation are used as the CPU and a USB-C port has been added, as well as better microphones and a quick charge function.

Surface Book

First version

On October 6, 2015, Microsoft introduced a second product, the Surface Book . It has Intel Skylake CPUs and up to 16 gigabytes of RAM . Furthermore, the most expensive product will have 1 terabyte of flash memory . The multi-touch display has a screen diagonal of 13.5 inches and a resolution of 3000 × 2000 pixels, a surface pen is included. There is also a 5-megapixel front camera, an 8-megapixel camera and 2 microphones on the back, an SD card slot, two USB 3.0 ports, a mini display port , a brightness sensor, an acceleration sensor and a magnetometer . For the graphics, an Intel HD 520 is installed in the display lid and, in more expensive models, an Nvidia GPU with 1 GB or 2 GB GDDR5 memory is also installed in the removable keyboard base . The weight is up to 1576 grams and the battery life, depending on the model, up to 12 hours. A docking stadium (surface dock) and wireless display adapter are available as optional accessories.

Surface Book with Performance Base

Since April 20, 2017, the Surface Book with Performance Base has also been available in Germany. The increased battery life (16.5 hours) and the GPU GeForce GTX 965M with 2 GB GDDR5 memory are new.

Surface Book 2

On October 17, 2017, Microsoft presented the Surface Book 2, which was first released in two sizes - 13.5 and 15 inches . As is already the case with the first generation of the Surface Book, there is a dedicated graphics card in the keyboard unit. In the 13 ″ version this is the NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050, while a GTX 1060 was used in the larger version. The entry-level version dispenses with a second graphics card and only uses the Intel HD Graphics 620 integrated in the processor. Either an Intel Core i7-8650U or i5-7300U (only available in the 13 ″ version) is used as the CPU , whichever is 8 or 16 Gigabyte RAM and 128, 256, 512 or 1024 Gigabyte mass storage in the form of a PCIe SSD are available. A first in a Surface device is the USB-C port . Xbox wireless technology is also integrated in the 15 inch model . The starting price is € 1,349, the maximum configuration is € 3,799.

Surface Book 3

The third generation of the Surface Book was presented on May 6, 2020 and has been available in Germany since June 5, 2020.

Surface Studio

The Surface Studio is Microsoft's first own all-in-one PC . The product was presented to the public on October 26, 2016. The device has a 28-inch screen with 4500 × 3000 pixels. This corresponds to 192 ppi , the display can reproduce colors in the DCI-P3 color space as well as in sRGB . The screen can be tilted into a flat position so that it can be used like a drawing board, input is either traditionally done with a mouse / keyboard or with the Surface Pen or with the so-called Surface Dial . This is a device in the form of a round disk that can be placed on the display. Rotary movements can be used to carry out various actions such as scrolling, zooming, regulating the volume, etc. The actual computer is located in the base of the device. The best equipped version of the Surface Studio has a Core i7 processor, a Geforce 980-M graphics card, 32 GB of RAM and a 2 terabyte hard drive. It has four USB 3.0 ports, a mini display port , an SDXC card reader and a headset port. Windows 10 is preinstalled as the operating system . It has been available in Germany since June 15, 2017. Depending on the equipment (i5, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M (2 GB RAM)), 128 GB SSD and 1 TB hard drive, the device costs between € 3,549 and (i7, 32 GB RAM, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 980M (4 GB RAM )) 128 GB SSD and 2 TB hard drive € 4,999.

Surface Studio 2

Surface Studio 2 was presented by Microsoft on October 2, 2018. The changes compared to the Surface Studio are the processor, now a more powerful Intel Core i7-7820HQ, and the RAM with 16 or 32 GB. An Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 (6 GB RAM) or Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 (8 GB RAM) are on board for the graphics. A 1 or 2 terabyte SSD (Solid State Drive) acts as storage .

Surface laptop

On May 2, 2017, Microsoft presented the Surface Laptop at an educational event, the first notebook with the Windows 10 S operating system , which, according to Microsoft, is primarily intended for schoolchildren and students. It has a 13.5-inch display with a resolution of 2256 × 1504 pixels (201 PPI). In addition to surface pen support, the display also has 10-point multi-touch and is protected by Gorilla Glass 3. Either an Intel Core m3 , Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 processor is used as the processor, which is supported by 4, 8 or 16 GB of RAM depending on the variant. Depending on the processor, the graphics card is the Intel HD Graphics 620 (i5) or the Intel Iris Plus 640 (i7). The Surface Laptop is available with 128, 256 or 512 gigabytes of internal storage and costs between € 1,149 (i5, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB) and € 2,499 (i7, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB) depending on the variant. According to Microsoft, the battery life of the Surface laptop should be up to 14.5 hours.

Surface Laptop 2

At the hardware event on October 2nd, 2018, Microsoft presented the Surface Laptop 2. Compared to its predecessor, the keyboard has been slightly redesigned and the 8th generation Intel processors are also used. Similar to the Surface Pro 6, the black color variant has been added.

Surface Laptop 3

At the hardware event on October 2, 2019, Microsoft presented the Surface Laptop 3. For the first time there is also a version with a 15 "display, with AMD processors (only with the 15" version) and those without Alcantara covering of the keyboard. Compared to its predecessor, the keyboard has been redesigned and the Intel processors of the 10th generation are now installed. Surface Go

Microsoft developed the Surface Go especially for the education sector , which was officially presented on July 10 , 2018 . It has a 10-inch display with a resolution of 1800 x 1200 pixels in 3: 2 format, resulting in a pixel density of 217 PPI. The processor is the Intel Pentium Gold 4415Y with 2 cores, and the graphics unit is the Intel HD graphics 615. Depending on the configuration, the main memory and mass storage are 4 GB RAM and 64 GB internal eMMC storage or 8 GB RAM and 128 GB internal SSD storage. In addition to the Surface Connect port for charging and connecting to the Surface Dock, there are also a USB-C port , a headset port and a microSDXC card reader . The battery life should be up to 9 hours. The Windows Hello camera, which is used for biometric registration via facial recognition, is installed in all equipment variants. Microsoft Windows is preinstalled as the operating system in S mode, which is designed to optimize performance. However, in S mode it is not possible to install programs and apps that do not come from the Microsoft Store. However, it is quite easy to switch to conventional Windows 10. The starting price is € 449, the maximum configuration is available for € 599. A version with LTE modem was later brought onto the market, which has 256GB SSD storage and 8 GB RAM.

Surface Go 2

Also on May 6, 2020, Microsoft presented the new Surface Go 2. There have been some changes compared to the predecessor, the display is now 10.5 inches instead of 10 inches, the resolution is 1920 x 1280 pixels. The exterior of the case is the same as that of its predecessor. Either the Intel Pentium 4425Y or the Intel Core m3 8100Y is installed as the processor , plus 4 or 8 gigabytes of RAM and 64 (eMMC) or 128 gigabytes (SSD) internal storage. According to Microsoft, the battery life should now be 10 hours instead of 9 hours as with the predecessor.

Surface Pro X

Microsoft officially presented the Surface Pro X on October 2, 2019. The Pro X has a 13 inch large display with a resolution of 2880x1920 pixels. The Microsoft SQ1 processor, which is based on the ARM architecture, is a novelty. There are also 8 or 16 gigabytes of LPDDR4x main memory , 128, 256 or 512 gigabytes of mass storage as part of an SSD hard drive and LTE connectivity. The Surface Pen is also supported, as is a separately available type cover in black. The "new Surface Pen", which is flatter than the classic pen, is used as standard.

According to Microsoft, the battery life of the Microsoft Surface Pro X should be 13 hours under realistic conditions . According to Microsoft, the battery should be able to be charged to up to 80% in under an hour. The device can be charged either via the Surface Connect port or via one of the two USB-C ports .

The digital cameras of the Surface Pro X have a resolution of 5 megapixels (front) and 10 megapixels (rear). The latter is able to record and save videos in up to 3840x2160 pixels. The front camera records videos in Full HD .

The 13 x 7 cm Surface Dock offers various connections (LAN, USB Type A, SD card reader, USB Type C) and can also charge the laptop.

Type cover

Microsoft has developed special cases that can be attached to both versions of Surface using magnets. These covers serve on the one hand to protect the screen side, on the other hand also as a keyboard. The touch cover is 3 mm thick and has a touch-sensitive inside that can be used as a keyboard, as well as a touchpad . It is available in five different colors. If you attach such a cover to the device, the background of the modern UI surface takes on the color of the cover. The Type Cover is 5 mm thicker and offers real keys with 1.5 mm travel and also a touchpad.

When the cover is folded down to use the device as a pure tablet (e.g. with the on-screen keyboard), the tablet automatically no longer reacts to keystrokes on the cover. When using the cover and the integrated stand, the viewing angle of the rear camera is adjusted so that it does not point downwards (e.g. on the table), but horizontally, as the camera is tilted by 22 degrees.

With the second generation, the new touch and type covers were also introduced, which also have backlighting and are thinner. The Power Cover is new and contains an additional battery that is supposed to extend the battery life. This works with both generations of the Surface Pro and the Surface 2.

The Type Cover 3 is adapted to the new size of the Pro 3.

The Type Cover 4 offers some significant improvements over its predecessors: the keys are now more spaced and are more reminiscent of a classic notebook keyboard. The touchpad is also now made of glass. A new version with a fingerprint sensor is also available.

Together with the Surface Pro (2017) Microsoft also presented a new, revised Type Cover. The Alcantara surface is special here.

A special TypeCover for the Surface Go is also available, which differs in size from the other TypeCovers.

Surface pen

Another classic accessory of the Surface Pro is the Surface Pen, which serves as a digital input pen. The current 5th generation pen has 4096 pressure levels and is optionally available in different colors.

Market launch and availability

Before the announcement of its own tablets, Microsoft had been offering an interactive table under the name Surface since 2008, which was renamed Microsoft PixelSense in June 2012 with the announcement .

Microsoft announced the availability of the Windows RT version of the Surface tablets at the launch of Windows 8. The Pro version should come on the market about three months later. The price of the Surface RT should be competitive with that of other tablets, the Surface Pro with that of ultrabooks . Contrary to what was initially expected, Microsoft announced the sale of Surface together with the online retailer Amazon in July 2012 . From July 18, 2012, registrations for pre-ordering the tablet were possible. A short time later, the pre-order was no longer possible, the reason given by Amazon customer service was the lack of valid information on the delivery date from the manufacturer.

In September 2012, Microsoft also announced that every employee in the company would receive a Surface tablet for free.

On October 26, 2012, the day of the public release of Windows 8, the Surface RT was also released. The Surface Pro was released on February 9, 2013 in the US and Canada.

The Surface RT has been available in 13 other countries since February 14, 2013 : Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

The Surface Pro has also been available in China since April 2, 2013.

On April 23, 2013, Microsoft announced that the Surface Pro would be available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK will be available before the end of May.

The Surface Pro has been available in Austria, Switzerland and Germany since the end of May 2013.

On July 15, 2013, Microsoft announced a sharp price reduction of around € 150 for the Surface RT after the tablet had not sold sufficiently.

The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 were released in Germany on October 22, 2013. Prices start at € 429 for the Surface 2 with 32 GB of storage and € 879 for the Surface Pro 2 with 64 GB of storage.

The Surface Book was published in Germany on February 18, 2016. Depending on the equipment, prices range between € 1,649 with an Intel Core i5 processor, Intel HD graphics and the top model with an Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB RAM € 2,919.

Sales figures

According to the financial news agency Bloomberg on March 15, 2013, Microsoft has sold a total of 1.1 million Surface RTs worldwide since October 2012 and around 400,000 Surface Pros since February 2013. In July 2013 Microsoft had to write off an amount of 900 million US dollars on unsold Surface RT tablets, and another 300 million US dollars in the following nine months.

criticism

First generation

The Surface Pro received mixed reviews. The high-resolution display, the solid and high-quality housing and the processor performance were praised. On the other hand, the high weight and the low battery life for a tablet were criticized. Another point of criticism is the storage capacity. Around 25–35 gigabytes of internal memory are stored in the operating system, so that the 128 GB variant only has around 80–90 GB of storage space available to the user. Another negative note is that the Surface Pro can hardly be repaired due to its construction. Replacing the battery is also very difficult due to the fact that it is firmly bonded.

According to the Stiftung Warentest, the 1- megapixel digital camera on the Surface RT has too low a resolution and the operation is very unusual, as there is no trigger button. A photo is triggered here by pointing a finger on the display. Compared to other tablet systems, this function otherwise sets the focus.

Second generation

The second generation of the Surface family received significantly better reviews than its predecessor. With the Surface 2, the mobility, the high-resolution and color-accurate display and the intuitive operation of the Windows 8.1 operating system are particularly impressive. The fast processor also made a positive impression in the tests, as did the full office package included free of charge , which is now also included with Outlook . But the Surface RT in the first variant is also supplied with the updates of the Windows 8.1 operating system as well as Office and Outlook in the current version. The very good processing quality and the quality of the materials used were also highlighted.
