action

The 40-year-old art historian Yvonne Dornim has been in a relationship with the much younger, formerly drug addict and convicted taxi driver Matthias Bechner for three months; her mother Else, with whom she lives with her grandmother Charlotte, rejects the unusual relationship. Matthias' friend Horst Kneip is found dead one day, apparently he has administered an overdose of heroin, detective chief inspector Lena Odenthal hears Matthias as a witness. When he comes out of the presidium, he is approached by Alfred Kurz from his old drug milieu, who tells him that "mother" Jelenak wants to see him again, Matthias explains that he no longer wants to have anything to do with the milieu. However, Alfred reminds him that he owes Jelenak money. In the early evening Else and Yvonne go for a walk on the banks of the Rhine and find Matthias' body there. When they get help, the corpse has suddenly disappeared, Else sees another van driving away. Shortly afterwards, Odenthal and her assistant Seidel arrive at the place where they were found, tire tracks from the transporter cannot be made out, Odenthal remembers that she recently interrogated the vanished corpse in the death of Horst Kneip. When Odenthal visits Yvonne in her art museum the next morning, she observes how the museum director Sturm tries to get closer to Yvonne. Yvonne says that this was the first time he knew about Matthias.

From Matthias' employer Odenthal and Seidel receive information about his environment, his mother has been looking in vain for contact with her son for some time, and he also had a friend at work called Michael Hoffmann, known as "Mickey". In the evening, Odenthal learns from Yvonne that Matthias' mother has been dead for years. Odenthal goes to Mickey, who thinks she is Yvonne and tells her about Matthias' plans to go to the Caribbean. When Odenthal leaves the bar where Mickey works, she is threatened by Matthias' work colleague Tarik and his friends, people want to know from her the whereabouts of Matthias, but they leave her when Odenthal declares that they do not know anything, Tarik gives her a phone number to call. The next day, Odenthal learned from Matthias 'boss that he had never spoken to Matthias' mother, only a man's voice could be heard on the phone. Seidel seeks out Tarik, who explains to him that Matthias got his sister pregnant and then refused to marry her, so his family is looking for him. At a vernissage, Odenthal director Sturm speaks to Yvonne, he says that Matthias only used her and was below her level. Odenthal then visits Tarik's sister, who tells him that she is not pregnant by Matthias, she lied to her brothers. She goes on to say that Matthias often mentioned a mother who was not his mother. Odenthal then asks Mickey about the mother, he still believes that she is Yvonne and gives her a phone number.

Charlotte Dornim's garden house, where Yvonne always met Matthias, was broken into during the night, and Seidel has since found out that Sturm has an alibi for the time of the crime. Odenthal wants to inform Yvonne about the break-in, but she has already noticed it, but has not reported it to the police. Shortly afterwards there is an argument between Yvonne and her mother about the death of Matthias. Odenthal goes to Jelenak and wants to speak to "Mother", Jelenak tells her that she must be wrong, he doesn't want to know Matthias either. When she leaves Jelenak's shop, she is kidnapped by him and Alfred, Alfred and Jelenak want to know from Odenthal, who they think is Yvonne, where Matthias is, that he is dead, they don't believe Odenthal and tell her, he should pay his debts. Odenthal is released, it is now clear to her that “mother” must be a man who presumably does drug deals under this name. The next day, Odenthal finds a dossier from a private detective in the mail that Jelenak's mother runs the drug ring, for which Matthias had previously dealt. A questioning of Jelenak remains without result, Odenthal is meanwhile convinced that Matthias is still alive and is hiding or being held. Else Dormin calls Jelenak and tells him that Matthias is dead. Meanwhile, Yvonne looks for Mickey and asks her about Matthias, who informs Jelenak, who keeps an eye on Yvonne from now on. Yvonne finally finds the private detective's report, her mother commissioned it. Yvonne runs away with the report, followed by Jelenak and his people. Matthias appears and implores Yvonne that he loves her. Her mother had given Matthias DM 30,000, with the money he went abroad to be safe from Jelenak, he and Else had faked his death for Yvonne. He has now returned because he loves Yvonne.

However, Yvonne runs away from Matthias and is kidnapped by Jelenak. The gangsters want to find out Matthias' whereabouts, Jelenak wants to give Yvonne drugs to get her to talk. Matthias followed the gangsters and wants to free Yvonne, but is shot by Jelenak; shortly afterwards, the police, led by Odenthal, storm the building, free Yvonne and arrest Jelenak and Alfred. Only for Matthias, any help comes too late.
