Kopper is a German television film from the crime series Tatort . The program produced by SWR was broadcast on January 7, 2018 on Das Erste . In this crime scene episode, the Ludwigshafen chief inspectors Odenthal and Kopper investigate their 57th joint case. At the same time, actor Andreas Hoppe is saying goodbye to this episode from the film series, named after his character, Commissioner Mario Kopper .

action

Kopper is delighted when he meets Sandro again on the street, his closest childhood friend, who later ended up in Sicily . When the two celebrate their reunion in a bar and indulge in old memories, Sandro is suddenly massively attacked by a guest. Kopper takes up his gun and shoots the man. Sandro now pleads with Kopper for help, because as a tax advisor he has seen more of the business of the Stidda mafia branch than is good for him. Sandro therefore wants to testify as a key witness when Kopper helps him get into the witness protection program.

Sandro's fear of Stidda's long arm fits all too well with the case that Lena Odenthal and Johanna Stern are currently working on, because a Mafia witness who was to be transferred to Italy killed himself in the Frankenthal prison . Odenthal, Stern and LKA Commissioner Manz are convinced, however, that the witness was forced to commit suicide. However, there is no evidence for this, so the prosecutor is unlikely to order an investigation. Kopper now fears that Sandro is threatened with a similar fate, hides the friend without telling Odenthal and his colleagues anything about it, and stays with him in a hotel. Sandro's panic and Kopper's own deadly short-circuit reaction in the pub prevent Kopper from confiding in Lena. At first, the inspector worries about her colleague and suspects that he is lovesick, but over time she no longer knows how to assess Kopper's behavior. He is not only unfocused during the investigation, but seems to almost sabotage their work. Without further ado she sends Kopper home, which is fine with him. So he can take care of Sandro. He gives him the telephone number of a contact person for witness protection and now also learns that his old friend had contacted him specifically because he did not trust the Italian police. For security reasons, Sandro does not want to meet LKA commissioner Manz personally, so Kopper records his testimony with a camera. Sandro also accuses the German authorities of collaborating with the Stidda. For example, the city of Ludwigshafen had illegal toxic waste disposed of in Italy 20 years ago. Today it is precisely this toxic waste that is being brought back to Germany in order to be disposed of in accordance with standards with EU subsidies. During these recordings, the two notice three men approaching their hotel room. They immediately flee and go into hiding in the city.

Due to a matching tattoo of both victims, Odenthal assumes that the death in the prison and the person shot in the bar are related. The trail leads to a Sicilian restaurant, but Odenthal does not yet have enough evidence in hand to take concrete action. But she is sure that she is on the right track, because both she and her colleague Stern receive silent warnings as a message. In addition, LKA commissioner Manz is surprisingly transferred after she actively campaigned for Odenthal's investigations into the Mafia.

Kopper is finally taking his colleague into confidence. He admits the fatal shot, but doesn't want to surrender until Sandro is safely housed in witness protection. He hands the recordings over to Odenthal so that she can apply to the public prosecutor for witness protection for Sandro. However, she cannot be convinced, since the allegations described do not include any specific criminal offenses under German law. When Sandro sees his plan failing, he loses his nerve and jumps off a bridge to death in front of Kopper's eyes. This means that Kopper does not have a witness for the self-defense in the bar. Due to his arbitrary behavior, he is dismissed from the police force. After the criminal proceedings against him were dropped, he left Germany and returned to his roots in Sicily.

Reviews

Christian Buß from Spiegel Online said: “The Kopper Arrivederci has become a small variation on the big Mafia cinema, an offer from the editors that Hoppe could not refuse. "The Godfather 2 1/2". [...] the 'Tatort' afterlife of his character Mario Kopper couldn't be more beautiful. The view is of the sea, a Sicilian woman in a summer dress is dancing in the sun, a well-chilled white wine bubbles in the glass. So it can go on forever after 57 episodes of 'Tatort'. Ciao, Mario. "

Claudia Reinhard wrote at the FAZ : “What ultimately led to the decision to take Commissioner Mario Kopper out of service remains a secret. In any case, the SWR gives the actor and the character a worthy exit with the 'Tatort' episode 'Kopper'. The case is a bit confused at times, but it links a cherished character with a big crime thriller. That seems entirely appropriate to the history of the investigator as well as the city, which was his territory for more than twenty years. "

Harald Keller rated the film for tittelbach.tv and said: Andreas Hoppe's last appearance “could have been an occasion to explore the character of Mario Kopper embodied by him more deeply. Youth, origins, and also his beliefs are discussed, but only touched upon. Escape movements and chases leave no time for that. ”“ Even a scene that shows Kopper in the confessional does not bring any nuance towards doubt, conflict or self-reproach. All of this does not really fit in with that Kopper, whom one has got to know and accompany over so many years as an empathetic fellow human being. "

Audience rating

The first broadcast of Kopper on January 7, 2018 was seen by 9.99 million viewers in Germany and achieved a market share of 27.4% for Das Erste .
