Leonessa is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The report produced by SWR was broadcast on March 8th, 2020 on Das Erste . In this 1123th crime scene episode, the Ludwigshafen commissioner Lena Odenthal investigates her 71st case, Johanna Stern in her 12th.

action

Hans Schilling, the owner of a western bar, is found shot dead in a shopping center in Oggersheim. The young Samir Tahan is one of Schilling's regular customers, he allegedly heard a shot and then found the dead person. He cannot provide any information about a possible perpetrator. Inspectors Odenthal and Stern learn from their wife Hanne Schilling that their husband often interfered in the milieu when something was wrong in his opinion. The investigators quickly notice that Samir's older brother Omar has served a two-year prison sentence for an armed gas station robbery. The anonymous report could have been made by Schilling at the time, but Stern doubts that the Omar brothers could have avenged themselves for it years later. In the case of Samir, no traces of smoke were found during the initial examination.

Odenthal and Stern become aware of 15-year-old Vanessa Michel, who is a regular at Schilling's pub and who seems to be friends with Samir. In addition, Vanessa is out and about almost every day with Leon Grimminger, who is the same age. Both come from rather broken homes and see little chance for their future. Leon and Vanessa move more and more into the focus of the investigation because they obviously have a secret. That will soon be revealed, because both Vanessa and Leon are prostituting themselves. With his sheriff mentality, Schilling will not have tolerated that. However, the investigators have no evidence and can only feel their way through the web of denial and reticence of the young people with great difficulty. When trying to prove the prostitution of Leon and Vanessa, the investigators went to a respected lawyer in the "net". Schilling took numerous photos during his secret surveillance of the young people, which also show the lawyer during sexual acts with Vanessa. For the man's reputation, becoming known would mean the end of his family and career. Lorenz explains, however, that he did not know anything about the photos and that he was not blackmailed.

In the course of the investigation, inconsistencies are found in Samir's testimony, as there is a witness to indicate the exact time of the crime. She runs a watch shop and can therefore very reliably indicate the exact time of the shot. This gives a time window of 10 minutes until the emergency call was received by the police. Samir is therefore questioned again and claims to have just stood there the whole time in shock. He is also confronted by his brother because his weapon has disappeared and he fears that Samir has stolen it.

The police can catch Samir trying to get his pistol from a hiding place in the toilet of the western pub. He is interrogated and in the end says he pissed himself in fear when he came into the saloon to kill Schilling with his brother's gun, but found him dead. He went to the bathroom to wash himself and his clothes and to hide his gun, which explains the 10 minute time difference. Samir protests that he did not shoot, although he originally intended to do so, which was also the reason for an argument with Leon the day before.

It is now clear to Odenthal what Leon meant when he said he was a Lost Boy during their interviews . Together with her colleague, she rushes to him, but is too late because he is falling from the skyscraper. In his memories he experiences the murder of Schilling shortly before. He apparently knew about his weapon in the closet behind the counter. He took it out and silently walked up to the landlord to shoot him.

The reason for Leon's act is not fully clarified, but he was probably “convicted” of prostitution by Schilling and wanted to prevent a possible act by Samir with the murder.

Reviews

Tilmann P. Gangloff from Tittelbach.tv wrote: In Leonessa “the Commissioner […] is less of a focus, but she is always very physically present. The film fulfills the requirements of a crime thriller, but Wolfgang Stauch (book) and Connie Walther (director) obviously had a youth drama in mind. The change of perspective in the direction of the underage suspects, the brittle realism and the image design with an often static, observing camera (Cornelia Janssen) underline the character of the case study. The moments in which the film sets visual accents are all the more effective. The dark finale, held in slow motion, is particularly effective. What is unusual about this 'crime scene' is also the fact that there is no film music of its own. "

The Augsburger Allgemeine also sees this crime scene as a “tough milieu study”. “The hopelessness spreads like poison in the new Ludwigshafen crime scene.” “The case polarizes. While some see 'Leonessa' as a successful social study, the case serves too many clichés for others. The role of Lena Odenthal is also controversial. There is only undivided praise at one point: The three young actors Lena Urzendowsky (plays Vanessa Michel), Michelangelo Fortuzzi (Leon Grimminger) and Mohamed Issa (Samir Tahan) are an asset to German television. "

Christian Buß from Der Spiegel assessed: “Nothing against ticking off investigators, but the widespread anger of Old Odenthal in Old Oggersheim is increasingly pushing itself over the actually detailed exploitation ratio in the prefabricated building scenario. Ego show in the misery report - doesn't work at all. "

At the Stuttgarter Zeitung , Adrienne Braun judged: “The inspectors are passionate about their work because the fate of the youngsters affects them. But it should have been a little more crime and a little less social drama. "
