Melee is a television film from the crime series Tatort . The episode was produced by Südwestfunk under the direction of Thomas Bohn and first broadcast on German television on October 19, 1997. It is the 373rd episode of the crime scene and 12th episode with Ludwigshafen investigator Lena Odenthal . For investigator Mario Kopper it is the third case.
action
Major Rolf Rohloff gives a small private party for his officers. Under the pretext that he was unwell, Lieutenant Georg Tremer said goodbye to his host. Shortly afterwards, he was shot dead while secretly trying to climb over the barracks fence during the night.
Inspector Lena Odenthal is called to the incident and arrives at the barracks, where she is already received by her colleague Mario Kopper. Odenthal learns from his comrades that Tremer had made an appointment with his girlfriend that night. As it turns out, however, it is Manon Kampmann, the wife of Colonel Rüdiger Kampmann.
Odenthal suspects a fatal plot behind the alleged oversight. A break-in into the tank hall, which is intended to justify the barracks' exaggerated need for security, is clearly a deception for the commissioner.
The fatal shot at Tremer was fired by the ambitious private Wolfgang Spirefka, who makes serious accusations. This even culminated in a suicide attempt, which, although not his life, cost him his military career.
Odenthal establishes a connection between the very short-term comrades evening, the increased guarding of the tank hall and Tremer's planned rendezvous. For them the whole thing appears to be an ice cold planned production that consciously cost the lieutenant his life. In the process, Private Spirefka became an unsuspecting henchman of death. With the help of Lieutenant Arnold von Brentano, Odenthal was able to locate the inn where Tremer often met with Colonel Kampmann's wife. Since the owner of the inn also recognizes the colonel himself in a photo, Odenthal arrests him. But the evidence turned out to be difficult, so that Kampmann had to be released from custody again. Odenthal and Kopper secretly observe him in the hope that he will give himself away. After they follow him to his house and observe that he obviously doesn't have his apartment key with him, they see him entering his house through a window on the upper floor. Shortly afterwards, shots are fired. Manon Kampmann shot her husband because she allegedly assumed that it was a burglar. It is clear to Odenthal that Kampmann's wife has now taken revenge in her own way for the death of her lover, and arrests her.

criticism
The Berliner-by-choice writes appreciatively: “The crime scene thrives on the Kampmann / Odenthal duel, the two are not that different in their tenacity - […] With regard to the strategy that Colonel Kampmann uses, there are a few weaknesses if you take a closer look. And, of course, clichés are shown again - but in places also broken, which gives the film a less moralizing touch than is the case with some of the other Odenthal crime novels. Tension is not created with the search for the perpetrator, it lies in whether Odenthal can arrest the colonel. Formally, this crime scene from 1997 is still handsome and quite modern. "
The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm give this crime scene the thumbs up and say: "Well-tempered cast and a coherent story."
