There is a wheelchair on the bank of the Rhine; There is no trace of the owner Lukas Pirchner, he has left his wallet behind. Lena Odenthal and Johanna Stern examine the medical history of the missing person, who has been paraplegic since a car accident, and consider suicide to be likely. Professor Bordauer is a transhumanist who consciously wants to create new possibilities with artificial intelligence. For example, by implanting novel circuit boards in patients, he wants to alleviate severe depression and combat dementia. He admits that Pirchner went to see him. But he couldn't help him.
The clinic pastor Ellig was told by the murdered doctor Dr. Anzell had been taken into confidence, but is now found brutally murdered in his chapel. There are increasing signs that Pirchner is alive and in the care of the clinic. Commissioner Odenthal wants to track him down there. She runs the risk that the professor and his assistant Malina will also perform an "experiment" on her to switch off her memory. When colleague Stern arrives at the clinic, supported by the car enthusiasts, they have to see that Pirchner can move independently with the help of an elaborate machine construction. After all, he confesses to having killed both confidants, while the professor himself becomes the "patient" of a colleague who experiments on him.
