Tavas (formerly Yarengume ) is a town in the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Denizli and at the same time a district of the Büyükşehir belediyesi Denizli (metropolitan municipality / metropolitan province ) created in 2012 . Tavas is about 42 km south of the center of Denizli . Tavas was the fifth most populous Ilçe in the province at the end of 2018.

The district of Tavas borders in the north on the İlçe Merkezefendi and Pamukkale , in the east and in the south on the İlçe Acıpayam and Serinhisar and in the west on the İlçe Beyağaç , Kale and Karacasu ( Aydın Province ). The landscape is particularly characterized by mountains. In the east of the district are the mountains Bozdağ (2419 m) and Kızılhisar Dağı (2241 m).

history

Ancient relics from Roman and Byzantine times have been discovered in the vicinity of Vakıf , Medet , Yorga , Kızılcabölük and Kızılca .

The area around the city was conquered by the Seljuks in the 13th century and the city was founded in its current location as Yarenguume . During the Seljuk period, Oghuz Turkmen from Central Asia settled in the area . Tavas belonged in the Seljuk period until 1365 to the Tavaslıoğlu Beyliği and then to the Menteşe Beyliği . In the Ottoman period Tavas belonged to the Vilayet-i Aydın . According to the city logo, Tavas received the status of a Belediye (municipality) in 1890 .

Economy and Infrastructure

There are many small businesses in the district, including a. Operations of the textile and clothing industry in Karahisar , Kızılcabölük and Tavas, Leblebibetriebe in Kızılca , manganese removal - and marble companies in Ulukent , chrome mining operations in Kozlar and coal operations in Avdan . Other sources of income in the district are arable farming and animal husbandry . The Bozdağ ski area, which belongs to Nikfer, is of particular touristic and economic importance for the district.
