The e-zine Laut.de rated Theater of the Mind with four out of a possible five points. From the editor's point of view, Alexander Engelen, Ludacris " probably understood that he [...] took himself a little too seriously with his 2006 ' Release Therapy ' ". Ludacris competes playfully with the numerous guest rappers, which leads to " hip hop in the best sense ". In particular the piece I Do It For Hip Hop with Nas and Jay-Z is praised as the “ new hip hop anthem ” and positively emphasized that Ludacris “ does not even have to stand in the shadows at this high-level encounter ”. With regard to the productions, the contributions by DJ Premier, Scott Storch and Ex-Little Brother 9th Wonder were particularly praised.
