The Great Central Road is a largely unpaved outback dirt road in the middle and east of the Australian state of Western Australia and in the southwest of the adjacent Northern Territory . It connects the small town of Laverton in Western Australia with the Lasseter Highway in Kata Tjuṯa in the Northern Territory near Uluṟu (Ayers Rock) . It is the direct link between Perth and Central Australia.

The entire length of the Great Central Road is part of the Outback Highway , which runs 2,800 km through central Australia.

Western Australia

Laverton leaves the Great Central Road to the northeast. There is a food control station about 20 km from the small town. Certain risk materials such as vegetables, honey, plant seeds, potatoes, onions and plants may not be imported into Western Australia. A mobile inspector occasionally checks the vehicles and penalizes any violations.

The runway crosses the outback from southwest to northeast between the Great Victoria Desert in the southeast and the Gibson Desert in the northwest. The only larger settlement is Warburton , where the Gunbarrel Highway meets the road from the north and runs together with it until shortly before the border with the Northern Territory. There, the Great Central Road also enters the Central Reserve administered by the Tjukaruru Aboriginal people . A permit ("Permit") is required for use.

Northern Territory

A few kilometers west of the Docker River and the settlement of the same name , the Great Central Road crosses the border to the Northern Territory and from there runs east-southeast along the Petermann Ranges . In this area the street is also called Tjukaruru Road . After 181 km, Kata Tjuṯa and the western end of the Lasseter Highway (S4) are reached. The road ends here.

The highest point on the road is at 637 m, the lowest at 563 m.

Road conditions and gas stations

Tjukaruru Road

The traffic volume is around 10,000 vehicles annually. A four-wheel drive vehicle is recommended. The road in Western Australia is partly well leveled and would therefore partly be suitable for conventional cars. However, the stretch between the border with the Northern Territory and Kata Tjuta has been in extremely poor condition for years and should only be driven with caution, even with a four-wheel drive vehicle. It is recommended that you take a radio or satellite phone with you in emergencies.

Petrol stations and roadhouses are located in (distance from the west from Laverton) Cosmo Newberry (85 km), Tjukayirla Roadhouse (300 km), Warburton (560 km), Warakurna Roadhouse (786 km) and Kaltukatjara (Docker River) (890 km) . There is another refueling facility in Yulara , 43 km east of the end of the road on the Lasseter Highway and the northern edge of the national park.

The route crosses Aboriginal reservations, and travelers need two permits (Permit) , which are available free of charge from the Department of Indigenous Affairs.

Attractions

The most famous sights of this road are at its eastern end in the Northern Territory : Kata Tjuṯa and Uluṟu , both within the Uluṟu-Kata-Tjuṯa National Park .

Other attractions include Lasseter's Cave , the Petermann Ranges , Giles Weather Station , Lake Throssell , Lake Yeo Nature Reserve , the Beegull Waterhole and Empress Spring .
