Death Robinson Caldwell (born February 19, 1818 in Morganton , North Carolina , † July 11, 1874 in Raleigh , North Carolina) was an American politician ( Republican Party ) and the 41st governor of the state of North Carolina.

Early years and political advancement

Tod Caldwell attended the University of North Carolina until 1841 . After graduating from law school and admitted to the bar, he became a district attorney in Burke County . Caldwell gained his first political experience in the years 1842 to 1845 as a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . In the years 1848 to 1849 and again from 1858 to 1859 he returned to this Chamber of Parliament. In between he sat in the State Senate from 1850 to 1851 . From 1868 to 1870 he was President of the Senate.

North Carolina Governor

In 1868 North Carolina had passed a new constitution. An innovation in this state was the site of a Lieutenant Governor ( lieutenant governor ). Caldwell was North Carolina's first lieutenant governor. After the impeachment of Governor William Woods Holden in December 1870, he became governor under the new constitution. In 1872 he was confirmed in this post in an official gubernatorial election. According to the new constitution, he was elected for four years. However, he could not end his term of office regularly because he died in office in July 1874. During his tenure, he ensured the reopening of the public schools, which had been closed for financial reasons since 1863. With a prudent budget policy, he succeeded in significantly reducing the national debt caused by the war. After his death, Lieutenant Governor Curtis Hooks Brogden took over the office of governor. Death Caldwell was married to Minerva Ruffin Cain. They had a child together.
