The 18th stage of the Tour de France 2006 on July 21st took the riders out of the Alps . After the start in Morzine , the drivers had to conquer 197 km to Mâcon and complete the final endurance test with the Col du Berthiand (780 m, category 2).

The stage to Mâcon began with an attempt to break away at 1.5 km. On the initiative of David Millar , a top group of three was formed, which Jaroslaw Popowytsch and Benoît Vaugrenard completed. After Vaugrenard had to let the other two go, the two of them continued their escape until the field caught up with them at kilometer 32.

After 48 kilometers, 15 drivers attempted another attack. They were able to break away quickly and get a maximum lead of 4:25 minutes. In the group were u. a. Patrik Sinkewitz , who already belonged to a breakaway group on the last two stages, Levi Leipheimer , who lost 21:23 minutes to the winner on the stage to Morzine , Juan Antonio Flecha and David Zabriskie . They crossed the Col du Berthiand as a single unit, the field 3:43 minutes behind. Sylvain Calzati attacked in the leading group with 52 kilometers to go , but unsuccessfully. Then tried Iñaki Isasi , who was able to pull away together with Leipheimer. After the attack, the 13 pursuers were initially unable to organize the follow-up work. Only when the lead had increased to 0:30 minutes did they come to an agreement again and caught up with the duo again 20.5 kilometers from the finish. The backlog of the main field rose rapidly.

Leipheimer's teammate Ronny Scholz initiated the first attack after the merger . Closed to him, Cristian Moreni and Matteo Tosatto on. Since Scholz was the weakest sprinter in the group, he tried to attack again 2.5 kilometers from the finish, but the two Italians were able to follow. Tosatto won the sprint ahead of Moreni and Scholz.

The peloton reached the goal eight minutes behind the winner. The favorites for the tour victory spared themselves for the time trial on the following day .
