The 10th stage of the Tour de France 2008 on July 14th was 156 kilometers long and ran from Pau to Hautacam . There were two sprint classifications as well as two mountain classifications of the Hors Catégorie (including the mountain finish) and two mountain classifications of the 3rd category on the program.

At first, four drivers tried to pull away, and this resulted in a breakaway group of 24. David de la Fuente secured the first mountain classification . This group later developed into a seven-person breakaway group consisting of Markus Fothen , Fabian Cancellara , Hubert Dupont , Óscar Freire , Jérémy Roy , Rémy Di Gregorio and Leonardo Duque . The latter wins the second mountain classification. Óscar Freire won both sprint classifications and thus secured the green jersey. Meanwhile , Freddy Bichot tried to catch up. On the ascent to the Col du Tourmalet , more runaways pulled away from the field, the field tore apart. A group of around 40 drivers formed around Kim Kirchen and gradually became smaller. In the outliers, Rémy Di Gregorio was able to pull away. His lead on the field was over eight minutes. Cancellara, Dupont, Duque, Roy and Fothen took up the chase. Di Gregorio was the first to reach the summit. Riccardo Riccò then led the field over the summit. Meanwhile, Alejandro Valverde had fallen behind. Di Gregorio was finally caught on the climb to Hautacam . Then there were again several attacks. Fränk Schleck , Leonardo Piepoli and Wladimir Jefimkin formed a top trio, which was joined by Bernhard Kohl and Juan José Cobo . Kohl and Jefimkin lost contact again, and later Schleck could no longer keep up the pace. The previous wearer of the yellow jersey Kim Kirchen also fell back. The goal in Hautacam was reached on a 30 meter long and 6 meter wide home straight. Piepoli finally wins the stage there ahead of his teammate Cobo. As third, Schleck missed the yellow jersey by a second, which was secured by Cadel Evans , who was in the first group of chases. Riccardo Riccò, who again led this chasing group, secured the dotted jersey and the white jersey of the best young professional. After the end of the Tour de France, Piepoli was stripped of the stage win because of doping.
