The 14th stage of the Tour de France 2010 on July 18th led over 184.5 km from Revel to Ax-3 Domaines . On this mountain stage there were two sprint classifications and two mountain classifications, one of the Hors Catégorie and one of the 1st category. After Rein Taaramäe had given up , 175 of the 198 registered participants started.

Race course

After almost three kilometers of neutral driving, the real start was reached at 12:07 p.m. Christian Knees was the first driver to try to break away, he was joined by eleven other drivers and three more shortly afterwards. Most of the outliers were set again shortly afterwards, leaving a group of five consisting of Geraint Thomas , David Zabriskie , Pawel Brutt , José Iván Gutiérrez and Amaël Moinard . Gutiérrez gave up the escape and was stopped 17 kilometers after the start. The group of four was then followed by Benoît Vaugrenard , Christophe Riblon , Jurgen Van De Walle , Pierre Rolland and Stéphane Augé . After 24 kilometers, the now nine-person leading group merged. The field now reduced the pace and the breakaway lead initially grew to around eight minutes.

Vaugrenard was the first to take part in the first sprint classification, which, however, was not sprinted. After that, the group's lead grew briefly to over ten minutes ahead of the field led by Rabobank , which was later supported by Astana . After Astana took the lead in the field, the lead was reduced again. It was already under eight minutes again when Augé was the first to cross the second sprint classification in the leading group.

Shortly before the start of the official start of the ascent to Port de Pailhères , Augé accelerated, causing the leading group to split up briefly, but then to reunite. At this point the lead fell to less than four minutes. When the ascent began, Augé fell behind along with Vaugrenard and shortly afterwards Thomas. Even from the field, headed by Juan Antonio Flecha from Team Sky , many drivers fell behind at the beginning of the climb, including Jaroslaw Popowytsch . At this point, Rafael Valls attacked in the field, followed by Rémy Di Gregorio . In the meantime Astana had taken control of the field again. Shortly afterwards, Carlos Sastre attacked together with Volodymyr Gustov , followed by Kanstanzin Siuzou . Meanwhile, the leading group consisted only of Riblon, Moinard and Van De Walle, who were able to keep their lead of over three minutes constant. Di Gregorio was overtaken by the field, and Siuzou also fell back later. Valls meanwhile overtook the fallen Augé. Jérôme Pineau now also had to let go. Valls now passed Thomas too. Also Vasil Kiryienka now attacked in the field, seek the Sastre, but later could no longer follow him. Lance Armstrong also fell behind. In the top group, Riblon and Moinard were able to leave their last companion Van De Walle. Anthony Charteau attacked in the field, the pace of which was set by Daniel Navarro . Riblon was the first to reach the summit, Valls was fourth in the mountain classification behind the former top trio, followed by Sastre and Kiryjenka. Damiano Cunego and Christophe Moreau attacked from the field before the mountain classification and were also able to secure points.

In the final ascent, Riblon again hung up on his compatriot Moinard, who had come back on the descent. In the chasing group, Sastre separated from his companion and was now in third position. When the field reached the final ascent, Alexander Vinokurow took over the pace work, Roman Kreuziger and Ivan Basso could no longer follow. Cunego was no longer able to follow Sastre either. Vinokourov attacked now, but let go again. Andy Schleck and Alberto Contador watched each other. Cunego and Kiryjenka have now been overtaken by the field again. Contador then attacked, followed by Schleck and Denis Menschow . Together they caught up with Sastre, who fell further back. After another unsuccessful attack, Contador began trying to stand. Robert Gesink took the opportunity to attack, followed by Joaquim Rodríguez and Jurgen Van Den Broeck . Menschow also attacked, pursued by Samuel Sánchez . Meanwhile, Riblon was the first to cross the mountain classification and shortly afterwards won the stage. Menschow and Sánchez followed 54 seconds later. Aided by the ambush of Schleck and Contador, they were able to run 14 seconds out on their group. Cunego and Sastre reached the goal 41 seconds after this.
