The 4th stage of the Tour de France 2016 was held on July 5th, 2016. It was the longest single stage and leads over 237.5 kilometers from Saumur to Limoges . There was a mountain classification in the 4th category and an intermediate sprint in Le Dorat after 170 kilometers. The flat stage finish ensured a mass sprint, which Marcel Kittel won.
Race course
For the first time in this Tour de France, a leading group did not form right from the start. Several drivers and groups were briefly in front, in the end Markel Irízar (TFS), Alexis Gougeard (ALM), Andreas Schillinger (BOA) and Oliver Naesen (IAM) were able to pull away . They were able to gain a maximum lead of 5:30 minutes, while the sprinter teams in the peloton together with the Tinkoff team around overall leader Peter Sagan made the pace.
The follow-up work in the field had an effect: at the intermediate sprint the lead of the four front runners was only about two minutes. Andreas Schillinger won the intermediate sprint ahead of Naesen, Irízar and Gougead. Peter Sagan was the fastest in the field and thus gained eleven points for the green jersey.
The only mountain classification of the day was won by Markel Irízar. After that, Alexis Gougeard fell back from the top group, the others were able to stay ahead up to kilometer 229 and were then caught up. As expected, there was a mass sprint, which was again decided very tightly: this time Marcel Kittel (EQS) prevailed just ahead of Bryan Coquard (DEN). Peter Sagan came in third. It was the German's first stage win in the 2016 Tour and the ninth overall, Coquard missed his first Tour stage win. With his third place, Peter Sagan again took the lead in the points classification from Mark Cavendish (DDD), who did not get past eighth place. There were no changes in the other scores, and the time bonuses for the third-placed placed Sagan slightly extended his overall lead.
