Travis Lyle Diener (born March 1, 1982 in Fond du Lac , Wisconsin ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, Diener was selected in the 2005 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic and played for five years for various clubs in the highest-endowed professional league NBA . He then worked for Banco di Sardegna Sassari in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A for four years . In 2014, he won the Italian cup competition with this team, in which he played together with his cousin Drake Diener , after acquiring Italian citizenship in 2013 after marriage and taking part in the 2013 European basketball championship as a national player in his adopted country . At the end of the 2014 season he interrupted his active career and became a coaching assistant at Marquette University , where he had studied and played himself. In the 2017/18 season he returned to Italy after a three-year break and signed a contract with Vanoli Cremona .

Career

Diener went to study at Marquette University , where he played for the college team Golden Eagles in Milwaukee from 2001 to 2005 in the Conference USA (C-USA) of the NCAA . While his three-month older cousin Drake Diener played at the same time with the Blue Demons of DePaul University in the same conference, Travis played together with the later NBA All-Star and Olympic champion Dwyane Wade .

In the first year you reached the final game of the championship tournament of the C-USA, which was lost to the Bearcats of the University of Cincinnati . After the first round defeat in the national NCAA finals tournament in 2002 they reached the prestigious Final Four tournament of the NCAA a year later in 2003 , in which, however, in the semifinals they were clearly defeated by the Jayhawks of the University of Kansas . After Wade had registered for the Entry Draft as "Player of the Year" of the C-USA after two seasons in the NCAA , Diener missed further successes with the Golden Eagles in the following two years in the C-USA and participations in the NCAA Finals. In the National Invitation Tournament 2004 you reached the third round, where you lost in the quarterfinals to the Cyclones of Iowa State University . With almost 1,700 points in 120 games, Diener is one of the ten best "All-Time Leading Scorers" of the Golden Eagles.

Despite the two rather sobering last two seasons in the NCAA, Diener was selected in the 2005 NBA Draft in the second round in 38th position by the Orlando Magic. As a rookie in the 2005/06 NBA , Diener was used in just over a quarter of the season's games for a good ten minutes per game when the Magic missed the play-offs for the third time in a row . A year later they reached the play-offs for the first time, in which they were eliminated in the first round against the Detroit Pistons in four games without a win. Diener stagnated in his playing time, was only used in three games more than in the previous season and not at all in the play-offs.

After two years his contract ended and he was signed by the Indiana Pacers during the summer break. With the Pacers he was used in the NBA 2007/08 after injury to Jamaal Tinsley in more than three quarters of the season games and in a quarter of the games 21 times as a " starter " an average of more than 20 minutes per game. However, the Pacers missed the play-offs for a win with 36 wins this season in 82 games. In the following season Diener had significantly more competition in his playing position at the Pacers and his playing times were reduced to a good 13 minutes per game in 55 season appearances. The Pacers again missed the play-offs as in the following NBA 2009/10 season , in which Diener was released from his contract in early March 2010 after only four missions.

Two days later he was signed by the Portland Trail Blazers , who used him in five games for a good five minutes per game. At the Trail Blazers, however, he had his first two appearances in play-off games at the end of the season when the Blazers were eliminated in the first round against the Phoenix Suns .

After the end of the 2010 season, Diener did not get a new contract in the NBA and he went to Italy to the first division promoted Banco di Sardegna from Sassari in Sardinia . The team reached the sixth place of the regular season straight away in the play-offs for the championship, in which they were eliminated in the first round against Armani Jeans Milan . In the following season, Travis cousin Drake, who had played in Italy since 2006, switched to Sassari and together they improved to fourth place in the regular season. In the play-off semi-final series they lost in three games against series champion Montepaschi Siena . Nevertheless, the club was qualified for a European club competition for the first time, but was eliminated in the Eurocup 2012/13 after the preliminary round. In the championship they reached second place after the regular season, but in the first play-off round they lost four of the following five games against Lenovo Cantù after two wins .

After Servant end of May had received in 2013 after marrying an Italian Italian citizenship, he took with the Italian national team at the European Championship finals in 2013 in part, where one in five first round wins and a second round victory over defending champion Spain in the quarterfinals with four points difference Lithuania defeated and retired from the medal award. After two more defeats in placement games, they finished eighth. In the 2013/14 season, Sassari won the final against defending champion Montepaschi of the 2014 Italian Cup competition, in which Travis Diener was named MVP of the final tournament. Then they defeated the German champions Brose Baskets in the decider of the second group phase of the Eurocup 2013/14 . But in the knockout games of the round of 16 they lost in two games against the German cup winner Alba Berlin . After finishing fourth in the regular season, Sassari was eliminated in the play-off semi-final series against EA7 Armani Milan.

Although Travis Diener had only become Italian a year earlier, he ended his active career at the end of the season in order to accept a position in the NCAA's Golden Eagles coaching staff for the following season in his homeland.

After a three-year break, he returned to Italy for the 2017/18 season, where he signed a contract with Vanoli Cremona . In 2019, as captain, he led Cremona to the first Italian Cup victory in the club's history.
