The USS Bainbridge (DDG-96) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class . It was named after Commodore William Bainbridge , who fought for the US Navy in the British-American War .

history

The contract to build the Bainbridge went to the Bath Iron Works on March 6, 1998 . At their shipyard in Bath , Maine , the ship was laid down in 2003 and launched after 17 months. The ship was christened by Susan Bainbridge Hay, the great-great-great-granddaughter of the namesake. After the launch , the destroyer was equipped and then passed the first tests, including the test of the missile systems in June 2005 with the shooting down of a RIM-67 Standard Missile 2 . The commissioning with the US Navy took place in November 2005; Home port is Norfolk in Virginia .

In April 2007, the destroyer took part in the NATO exercise Neptune Warrior . In September the Bainbridge became the flagship of the commander of Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 , replacing the USS Normandy (CG-60) . The fleet was on site when a volcano erupted on the Yemeni island of Jazirat Jabal at-Tair on September 30 , and supported the local military in their search for survivors.

In October 2008, the Bainbridge took part in the sinking of the decommissioned destroyer USS O'Bannon (DD-987) and in 2009 moved to the side of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) in the Indian Ocean to pick up Somali pirates to fight. In April she was used to observe the pirate-boarded Maersk Alabama , a freighter sailing under the American flag. The hostage-taking of the master of the Mærsk Alabama was ended by the crew of the Bainbridge after four days on April 12th. Three of the four pirates were shot dead by snipers from a US Navy SEAL team .

Armament

For defense against approaching missiles, the ship received the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) anti - aircraft missiles, which are fired from the Vertical Launching System . For further air defense, a close-in-weapon system in the form of the Phalanx MK 15 RAM was subsequently installed behind the aft chimney structure in 2008 , which was not originally intended for construction from DDG 85 (Block IV).
