The USS Shoup (DDG-86) is a destroyer in the United States Navy and belongs to the Arleigh Burke class . It is named after General David M. Shoup , who was Commandant of the Marine Corps in the 1960s .
history
The DDG-86 was ordered at the end of 1996 and laid down exactly three years later at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula , Mississippi . After a construction period of less than a year, the ship was launched and was christened. On June 22, 2002, after completion of the shipyard test drives, most of which took place in the Gulf of Mexico , the Shoup was officially put into service.
The end of 2004 that drove Shoup with the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) , as the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 took place. In the new year, the Shoup relocated as part of the Operation Unified Assistance . In 2006 the destroyer took part again with the Lincoln in exercise Valiant Shield . Also in 2008 a relocation with the Lincoln followed , which led the group to the Indian Ocean and the waters of the Persian Gulf. In May, the Shoup responded to an emergency call from a Yemeni dhow and dragged it back to home waters.
On August 1, 2010, the destroyer collided with a civilian, 6.5-meter-long passenger ship during practice runs off the coast of California. Both ships suffered slight damage, but were able to continue on their own. There were no injuries. A month later, the Shoup moved to the Pacific and Middle East on the Lincoln side .
Armament
For defense against approaching missiles, the ship received the RIM-162 Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile (ESSM) anti - aircraft missiles, which are fired from the Vertical Launching System . For further air defense, a close-in-weapon system in the form of the Phalanx MK 15 RAM was subsequently installed behind the aft chimney structure in 2007 , which was not originally intended for construction from DDG 85 (Block IV).
