Uedesheim is a district of the city of Neuss in the Rhine district of Neuss .

location

In the north and east, Uedesheim borders on the Rhine , in the west on the A 46 and A 57 , in the south on the area of the city of Dormagen . The western part of Uedesheim, located on Bundesstraße 9 , was previously called Macherscheid .

history

St. Martinus Uedesheim. The tower was preserved in 1960 when the previous building of the church was demolished. Lower floors erected in 1453.

Roman settlement was proven by finds and the "Villa Udenis". In addition, a Roman road led through what is now Uedesheim. The ending "-heim" indicates an old Franconian name. Uedesheim was first mentioned in writing in a forged document from 1188 as Udensheim . Since that time, the abbess of the Neuss Quirinus monastery owned a farm in Uedesheim. In 1277 it had an area of 42 acres . In 1293 the main courtyard of the Quirinus monastery was built in Uedesheim. The Catholic Church was built in the 14th century. In the Truchsessian War the place was completely destroyed. The Thirty Years' War did not leave Uedesheim unscathed either. In 1646 Hessian soldiers looted the place. On December 14, 1661, a fire destroyed the Catholic Church and the Quirinushof. The church was destroyed again by fire in 1783 . In 1794 French troops occupied Uedesheim. They set up an artillery position in the bend of the Rhine between Uedesheim and the Fleher Bridge. Their remains are known as the "Old Battery" and can still be seen today. From 1794 the place belonged to the canton Neuss in the arrondissement Krefeld . The Quirinushof with 49.51 hectares of land was expropriated and became the property of the French state. In 1815 Uedesheim fell to the Kingdom of Prussia . The community of Uedesheim was established in 1816, it consisted of the places Uedesheim, Macherscheid, Stüttgen and Wahlscheider Hof and it belonged to the mayor's office and community of Grimlinghausen . In the years before 1929 , the city of Düsseldorf laid claim to Uedesheim and had already brought the two Wahlscheider courts into private ownership. In 1929 the community of Uedesheim was incorporated into the city of Neuss. However, the place Stüttgen came to the office of Norf . American soldiers occupied the place in 1945 . After the war, a farming settlement was built for displaced farmers. When in 1975 the Norf office was incorporated into the city of Neuss, the place Stüttgen came to the city district of Uedesheim.

Until the Fleher Bridge was built in the late 1970s in connection with the expansion of the A 46 , Uedesheim on the left bank of the Rhine and Himmelgeist on the right bank of the Rhine, belonging to Düsseldorf, were connected by a car ferry . Operations ceased after the Fleher Bridge went into operation. There had been a ferry connection between Uedesheim and Himmelgeist for centuries. In 1888 the ferry that had existed up to that point was replaced by a cross rope pontoon. The ferry service ran without accidents until 1947. On March 7, 1947 there was a serious accident. The St. Antonius ferry sank in the Rhine, which was carrying drift ice at that time. 14 people were killed in the sinking.
